Two separate jobs completed in one day.
First being a Birch heavily laden with Witches Broom (Taphrina), we removed 100% of what was visible of this fungus to try to eliminate it and stop further spreading to neighbouring trees. The Birch was also lightly reduced and shaped.

Second job was a Cherry that had been historically pollarded. The customer wanted more light and to take it away from over the house/gutters. She thought the only option was to re-pollard. This would have gained max light temporarily but looked unappealing and it would have grown back with vengeance. Sometimes a pollard may be the best option, but in this case I suggested a fairly heavy reduction and internal canopy thin. The tree canopy is still there looking natural and when the leaves come in there will be a huge difference. Much more direct light with where the canopy used to reach and now dappled light from the canopy thin.

Along with the cherry, we also removed an Ash tree that was affecting an old stone boundary wall and had signs of Ash Dieback.

As per the last post, this was stage 2 of 2. A very different but equally satisfying bit of work.

Our client wanted a couple groups of multi stemmed Himalayan Birch trees (he admired the ones from where he used to live). We devised a plan of one group of 3 in the most central location and another group of 2 in another location nearby.

The main idea was creating this design for sturdy but aesthetically pleasing tree guard frames. This location is prolific for dear and other tree destroying creatures such as rabbits.

There were some hurdles working around/removing old roots to put the trees and the frames in the position required but in the end it worked out well!

Very guarded trees that should be able to grow at a good rate, become and really lovely living feature and eventually not require their guards.

A really enjoyable job we did a month or so back at a location in the Archerfield estate. This location is within the local conservation area and so needed permission from the local tree department - this was a service we carried out for the client. The permission came back before our provisionally booked date so we were able to complete the work when scheduled.

The work consisted of pruning, reductions, limb removal and small tree removals. The reason for the works mostly consisted of failure mitigation from the heavy winds in this location and correcting miss-formed growth. Including the removal of two smaller sycamore that had struggled to grow from under the canopies of the larger trees.

We considered this stage 1 of 2. The next post will be stage 2 where we carried out planting of 5 Himalayan Birch trees.

This ancient Ceanothus had partially failed. First thoughts were to try to correct the angle and try to support it, then when it became apparent it had “dead man’s fingers” fungus it was deemed too much of a losing battle.

It was decided to remove and replant.

We ended up planting 3 in replacement. We planted a very pot bound Birch that had been in the garden for years, then the client went and purchased 2 new Ceanothus in two completely different forms.

The result was half their garden back and use of their summer house after they had dealt with the partially failed Ceanothus for quite some time, hesitant to deal with it.. probably because deep down they knew it needed to be removed! Though a shame, it was the only thing we could do in the end.

The two before and after snaps I got from a large job we completed on Thursday. First being a slightly overgrown and dense eucalyptus. We lightly reduced and thinned the canopy. Secondly, was this large area of Holly that clients wanted the humps removed, the way Holly grows made it quite difficult but we were able to suit their expectations and make it look nice!

Before and after of this previously “topped” and overly pruned Beech tree.

The spec was to turn this tree that had been forced to become a bush and hedge like, due to the extreme reaction growth, back into a tree!

Customers were delighted with the result and having a much more natural tree back!

A Job from mid January in Edinburgh:
Removing/coppicing a previously pollarded Eucalyptus that was within a conservation area.

Though the tree was essentially removed - we managed to gain permission from the council under the premise of a coppice. This is allowing the tree to regrow into a more manageable size.

Not all species can cope with this, yet Eucalyptus is one that can absolutely handle being cut right down and regrowing.

A fairly big job from a few weeks ago. These trees were part of a TPO grouping and required the planning permission to do the works.
Three Horse chestnuts - one tree needed to be removed due to decay and two others locationally reduced due to their form and some decay.

A Willow we did this week. We created a new pollarded structure. There was quite a lean to the main stem with a huge amount hanging over the neighbours, so the time came to make this tree smaller. The job only had access through the house so we sourced and installed floor protection sheeting!

A very happy customer upon this job completion.

They needed the neighbours overhanging hedge/tree line neatly cut back to the boundary and shaped ontop. The customer was trying to sell his house and requested we got this job booked in and completed in a short amount of time. We managed to organise this to suit their requirement!

If you need any work done in a short amount of time, feel free to ask and we can see what we can do to accommodate!

A job from last week.

Initially the customer enquired with concerns that this Sycamore may need to be removed, thinking it may have been unstable and too close to the building. As soon as I saw it, there were no concerns of instability or anything visibility structurally unsound.

The whole crown of this co-dominant stemmed Sycamore did not need to be reduced all over. I suggested the side over the garage being brought in and raised. Then several tips and some of the top from the garden side, that stuck outwidth the general shape.

The garage roof will now dry out more easily and the customer was happy that his concerns of branch failure were lessened, let alone failure of the whole tree.
