Dunkeld and Birnam.

We’re delighted to announce our appointed by the
Dunkeld, Birnam and District Community Development Trust to lead a team of consultants to progress feasibility work for future community-led homes in the extraordinary historic setting known as the “Gateway to the Highlands”. Won as part of a competition process, we are collaborating with Urban Animation, , and (formerly Thomas & Adamson) on the project.

The study will build on the prior community engagement work of the Trust that informed the Community Action Plan and Community Housing Needs Survey in 2022, as well as last year’s Local Place Plan. The latest work will involve further engagement events, with the consultant team keen to collaborate with the wider community to explore options and discuss ideas to help inform the future delivery of any new low-density homes, as well as other possible community uses. We’re excited at the challenge involved in considering appropriate interventions in what is an extraordinary historic setting.

Fishermans Lodge, Newcastle.

Fraser/Livingstone Architects attended a kick-off site meeting this week, exploring the site of Deep Dene House, also known as Fishermans Lodge, in Jesmond Dene. Following this visit, the team are investigating ways to develop the site that would help re-animate a historic and well-loved asset at the heart of Newcastle.

Joining Fraser/Livingstone Architects on the visit were the client Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust, engineers from Narro, and representatives from Newcastle City Council.

We look forward to developing a brief and workshopping exciting new ideas for Fishermans Lodge.

AJ Architecture Awards 2025.

We are delighted to have our recently completed Biggar Youth Project highly commended in the refurb category of the 2025 AJ Architecture Awards. Congratulations to the Biggar Youth Project SCIO, the contractor McCann Builders, and the other consultants involved, including Elliott & Company, Carbon Futures, DKI Consulting Engineers Ltd and Hardies Chartered Surveyors.

The Project is a voluntary organisation which runs activities for High School age young people in Biggar, South Lanarkshire. They support them by providing a base for a range of activities, a place to gather and access hot food, food-share, computers, games and the emotional and practical support of the volunteers and staff that run the space.

The building dates back to the late 1800s, and was formerly part of a much larger livestock auction market. Our design has seen some of the original doors, rooflights and windows reintroduced to bring more light to the interior, bringing reference to the history of the building and animating the facade facing the public realm. Due to spiralling fuel costs and the desire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a particular focus was on increasing the energy efficiency of the building.

The refurbishment has introduced significant improvements to the building fabric, thermal performance through natural, breathing materials and added renewable energy generation on the premises, as well as a rearranged and upgraded the internal layout to improve facilities and ensure that the building offers a warm, bright welcoming space for young people and others.

FLA are grateful to the judges for this recognition and offer well deserved congratulations to the winning projects.

Terrain Talks “Thoughts on Rural Housing”.

Robin Livingstone will be speaking at Terrain Talks 008 “Thoughts on Rural Housing” next week, an evening of ideas and inspiration on building housing sensitively within protected landscapes. Featuring Fraser/Livingstone Architects, Barefoot Architects and Savannah Fishel, the event will be chaired by Dominic Ziegler, The Economist’s senior editor, and will explore community-focused and new models for rural housing development in traditionally restrictive countryside settings. The evening will focus on the delivery of community led and alternative housing models and will touch on the importance and role of high-performance supply chains in achieving successful outcomes.

The event is being held at 6:30pm on Thursday 18th September 2025 at St Michaels Church, Chagford in Devon. Tickets can be purchased here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/thoughts-on-rural-housing-tickets-1611333314319?aff=oddtdtcreator

Terrain Talks is a Dartmoor based forum run by O’Brien Van der Steen Workshops for the discussion, reflection and celebration of regional and rural architecture and landscape. The event is made possible with support from the RIBA.

The Birks.

Detailed Planning approval secured for our contemporary “smart clachan” proposals on the rural edge of Forres at last week’s Moray Council Planning Committee.

Drawing inspiration from the loose patterns of historic clachan settlements, a collection of linear homes reminiscent of traditional longhouses stretch out into the surrounding landscape, with footprints subtly shifting to respond to the sloping topography, and arranged to form sunny south facing garden spaces while exploiting eastern views over an expansive agricultural landscape.

Influenced by the intimate green lanes and pebble paths known as “stryplies” that run between the parallel lines of cottages in the nearby village of Findhorn on the Moray Firth, a new lane or “vennel” - Scots for a passageway between gables – runs through the heart of the cluster. Defined by a continuous walled enclosure, a series of “shieling” outbuildings define private entry courts giving access to each home. Animated by native silver birch, the lane leads to a shared pathway connecting out to the open shared landscape.

The Grange.

Work is continuing on-site at the former Rosslynlee Hospital with the removal of the more modern interventions to re-establish the grand, symmetrical pavilions, wings and courts. The demolition material will be reused wherever possible to infill existing openings or crushed and used for the ground up fill for roads or in gabion baskets to landscaping retaining areas.

Meanwhile, a collection of local bricks used in the original construction are on display as part of an and .edinburgh exhibition “If Bricks Could Talk”. They are presented alongside other materials salvaged from demolition sites, and accompanied by material passports and brief stories that reflect the life, journey, or significance of each displayed item. Details on the exhibition are:

The Birks.

Our proposals for a contemporary “smart clachan” cluster of homes on the rural edge of Forres have recently been submitted for Detailed Planning.

Drawing inspiration from the loose patterns of historic clachan settlements, a collection of linear homes reminiscent of traditional longhouses stretch out into the surrounding landscape, with footprints subtly shifting to respond to the sloping topography, and arranged to form sunny south facing garden spaces while exploiting expansive eastern views over open agricultural landscape.
