Partially buried in the landscape, the three-storey home emerges from a ruined walled garden to directly face the loch.

Early studies for a church restoration project in the Trossachs.

Initial community engagement asked how the space might be used and what layouts might be possible in the space once the fixed pews are removed.

The dramatic crack in the White House stonework has been carefully stitched back together using discreet steel ties, allowing the building’s story—including its period of dilapidation—to be both told and celebrated. As it transforms into a family home, the design retains the sense of ruin that so strongly defines the site.

We’re excited to share our evolving proposals to transform a steel-clad church on the shores of Loch Goil into a family home.

An intermediate floor is introduced to accommodate first-floor bedrooms. At ground level, a boot room, utility and wet rooms are arranged alongside a snug tucked beneath the new floor. To the rear, the kitchen, living and dining spaces open up into a generous double-height volume on the more private elevation — framing views out to the garden and the wider rural landscape beyond.

We’re excited to share our evolving proposals to transform a steel-clad church on the shores of Loch Goil into a family home.

Dating back to 1892, the church was built by local volunteers using donated materials. Although it has stood derelict since 2008, it still retains many of its original features — including its dramatic scissor trusses.

Our concept design seeks to celebrate these historic elements by creating spaces that frame and enhance them, while carefully introducing the programme needed to support modern rural living.

Revisiting The White House.

Set on the remote Hebridean Isle of Coll, The White House reimagines an 18th-century ruin as a contemporary family home.

Rather than fully restoring or replacing the original building, the design carefully preserves its dramatic, cracked stone shell and weaves new living spaces around and through it. A glazed link connects the historic ruin to new extensions, opening the home to sweeping views over Grishipol Bay.

The result is a striking dialogue between old and new.

Homes at the Mac 🏡
(post 3/3)

Option 2- NEW BUILD

Alongside conversion, a new-build option explores 8 affordable homes arranged in a steading-inspired layout. Cottage-scale terraces frame a shared central space, maximising daylight, privacy, and connection to the landscape. Materials from the existing Mac building are reused across the site, embedding its history into the new design.

The homes are designed to be energy-efficient, light-filled, and adaptable—supporting a sustainable and community-focused future for the site.
