I am now taking bookings for September onwards for your small hedge trimming needs.

🌿 When You Can Trim Hedges (UK)

• September to February — This is the safe, legal, wildlife‑friendly trimming window.
• Ideal for routine shaping, tidying, and keeping hedges neat.
• Avoids disturbing nesting birds.

---

🐦 When You Should Not Trim Hedges

• March to August — This is nesting season, protected under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981.
• Cutting during this period risks disturbing active nests, which is an offence.
• RHS guidance also treats this period as strictly no‑cut unless you’ve checked thoroughly and confirmed no nests.

---

🌳 Best Practice for Garden Services

• Light shaping: September–October
• Winter hard cuts or reductions: January–February
• Always check for nests before any cut, even outside nesting season.
• Conifers (like Leylandii) respond best to regular trims in the safe window to avoid cutting into dead wood.

🌱 Essential May Gardening Jobs

1. Lawn care

• Mow your lawn weekly unless you’re doing No Mow May.
• Repair or sow new lawns at the start of May — it’s the last good window before autumn.
• Raise the mower blade to 4–5 cm to keep grass greener and reduce weeds.

🌼 Flowers & borders

• Deadhead tulips and daffodils, but leave foliage to die back naturally.
• Plant out summer bedding (sunflowers, cosmos, nasturtiums) after the last frost.
• Tie in climbing plants like clematis, wisteria and honeysuckle.
• Take softwood cuttings of hydrangeas, fuchsias, lavender and penstemons.

🌿 General maintenance

• Water new plants regularly, especially during warm spells.
• Hoe weeds on dry days to kill seedlings early.

🌸 Hanging baskets & containers

• Plant up summer hanging baskets in May but keep them sheltered for a few weeks to avoid frost damage.
• Use peat‑free compost with slow‑release fertiliser and harden baskets off before fully exposing them outdoors.

🌳 Shrubs & perennials

• Prune spring shrubs like forsythia and chaenomeles after flowering.
• Stake tall perennials (delphiniums, peonies, phlox) before they flop.
