This video is an interview between me and my father Quinlan Terry CBE, discussing the many unforgettable moments in his highly successful sixty-year career. His life has seen classical and traditional architecture change from being derided as a joke and even immoral in the ‘50s and ‘60s, to its adoption by Prince Charles and the Post-Modern movement in the ‘80s, and now its total acceptance.

As well as an investigation into these broad cultural trends, Quinlan recounts many of the amusing anecdotes that punctuated his career: these include, working with Profumo during the scandal, collaborating with Sir Anthony Blunt on researching Renaissance architecture, and being in Libya measuring Roman ruins at the time of the Gaddafi coup d’état.

With a broad variety of topics discussed, this interview will interest architects and non-architects alike.

Clandon Park in Surrey, is one of the great houses of the Georgian era, which tragically burnt down in 2015. The beautiful interior, which included some of the best plasterwork of the period was destroyed. Fortunately, insurance was in place to restore it back to what it was. It would be a restoration, similar in spirit to the much praised restoration of Notre Dame in Paris, or Uppark in Sussex. Unfortunately, the National Trust, does not want to do this, instead they have now submitted a planning proposal that leaves Clandon’s interior a ruin with fire-blackened bricks, unsympathetic modern walkways, and intrusive kiosks and a lift shaft, leaving the fine baroque interiors unrestored. This scheme must be stopped and we have until 20th December to write in to the planners to voice our reservations. PLEASE WRITE! EVERY EMAIL COUNTS! Follow link for details.

Here are some excellent CGIs of a recent project of ours. The great thing about CGI is the ability to give clients alternatives before committing to a design.

I had a new client the other day who phoned up and told me only two things: the size he wanted in square feet and that it had to be energy efficient,” says Fran

Many people, perhaps you, would love to build yourself a new house in the country where you could live with your family and work from home in rural tranquility. It is perhaps the English dream. The problem is getting planning permission. But don’t despair, NPPF paragraph 80e is the planning legislation which is specifically written to allow this to happen. The clause states that the new house has to be an ‘exceptional’ work of architecture and so it is not easy to get planning permission… but not impossible. In this video architect Francis Terry and planning specialist Martin Leay discuss how this can be done in practical terms using examples of their many past successes of ‘paragraph 80e’ houses.

I needed to get a puncture on my daughter’s bike repaired and so I went to the Bike Doctor in East Bergholt. He said I’ll have this done in ten minutes. But what could I do in East Bergholt for ten minutes? I thought I would go and visit the church.
