Young Port Allen apple trees, a rare heritage Scottish dessert apple originating from near Errol in the Carse of Gowrie. Crisp, juicy and well suited to local conditions. Alongside is a very welcome w**d called Starwort (Spergula arvensis) which I've never seen before, but is attract all sort of insects including ladybirds, hoverfly and lacewings. Thanks to these visitors I don't have any aphid problems at the nursery

Phenomenal growth at the nursery with plum trees already a metre tall. I can offer 15 varieties, including the classic Victoria plum, some very special varieties like the Japanese blood plum 'Satsuma' and heritage Scottish plum 'Gordon Castle'. Cherries and apples not far behind and available on both dwarfing and semi-vigorous rootstocks. The Rowan's are an ornamental favourite; this Sorbus 'Chinese Lace' has the most beautiful lace-like leaves. It's been a fairly dry spring and May is an important month for newly planted trees. Water is key! Moisture around the root zone is essential for those new root hairs to grow out into the soil and strengthen your tree.

If you planted out bareroot trees this winter then giving them a good dose of 20L (2 watering cans) fortnightly during May, June and July will hugely improve their establishment.

Shortly after giving this tree's roots a good soak I mulched it with woodchip. Compost or even cardboard would do too. This will help lock in moisture and suppress competing plants, allowing your newly planted trees to thrive.

These budded Willow Leaved Pear look quite remarkable with their silvery downy leaves. In contrast, the glossy red young leaves of the Pyrus communis rootstock are also showing. I'll be rubbing these off so that the variety succeeds

Fine weather for planting out the Mother Orchard in bonnie Newburgh; a range of 230 varieties of apple, pear, plum and cherry with some pretty flowering cherries, Malus, Sorbus and Crataegus too. Thanks to Roger Howison at Parkhill Farm for supporting this project. It's a race to plant these bareroot trees before they emerge from winter dormancy, but one of the upsides of working late is the fantastic sunset . You can just make out the tractor down in the new Mother Orchard field.

Pruning in a very old orchard in Newburgh today. There's some real beauties here such as the Grey Benvie pear and some old Worcester Pearmain. Also planting a new generation of trees included Superb and Epicure bred by the Laxton brothers and cider varieties that do well here like Yarlington Mill

Heading back rootstocks I budded last year. The very welcome window of dry weather means that cut surface will callous over quite quickly with less chance of any fungal disease entering. So excited to see these buds grow into trees this season!
