Lucy Apple Artist A Fine Art graduate from the Slade who produces painting inspired by people and situations. Website: On completion of my studies, I moved back down to Cornwall.

I graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2007 with a master’s degree in painting,
having previously studied fine art at Falmouth College of Arts. I have been a member of Newlyn Society of Artists since 2008. I often sit for days staring at a blank page of my sketchbook, without any inspiration for my next painting, thinking “That’s it! I’ve run out of ideas!” But eventually, slowly, things

begin to take shape and an image forms in my mind. It could be from the things I overhear in cafes and shops or possibly a situation I’ve remembered that has made me laugh. From here comes a sketch, then finally the finished painting. I also get inspired by conversations I have had with strangers, friends and family. I like to incorporate these scenarios, which are often quite humorous, into the pictures. I enjoy making people laugh and hopefully this shows through the work. The medium I use is diluted acrylics, adding texture with watercolour pencils on canvas and board. I like the transparency of the paints when they are watered down so you can see the original pencil drawing.

I have some prints at Falmouth Art Gallery starting tomorrow for the summer.

Here’s a bit about the prints.

I am currently working on a book entitled Auntie Palsy’s Anecdotes and these are some of the final images from the book. I have Cerebral Palsy and this provides me with a wealth of work and experiences.

I studied for a fine art BA from Falmouth College of Art. After graduating from Falmouth in 2005, I got accepted onto a Master in Fine Art at the Slade.

I work from home in Falmouth, using my sitting room as a studio. I use collage in my work as I find it easier to change the final piece.

My current work is all about storytelling, memories and moments. I take situations that are often quite stressful and overwhelming. From being at a disabled boarding school, to more recently travelling around London, I write anecdotes about these situations and then turn them into collaged pieces. I draw on heavyweight paper using Tombow brush pens and then I ask my assistant to cut the images out to make the final piece.

And then I have a cup of tea!
