A simple revamp for the summer.
New pergola built to match the original, using Harvest Wood Products timber and The Garden Trellis Company trellis. Existing planting kept in place and tidied, ready to start climbing and softening the structure again. A small change that makes a noticeable difference in the front courtyard.

This unused raised bed’s seen better days: 2x3m, wooden sleepers, topped up with rubble. Plenty of potential for wildlife...

For the past 20 years I’ve been pruning this Acer platanoides ‘Drummondii’ (commonly known as Variegated Norway Maple)

One of the quirks of this tree is that it occasionally sends out plain green shoots (see the last pic). If those are left to grow, they’ll slowly take over and the tree will lose its variegation altogether.

So every few years, I remove those reverted branches to keep the tree’s distinctive cream‑edged leaves looking their best. A small bit of maintenance, but it makes a huge difference to the long‑term shape and colour of the tree.

If you’ve got a variegated tree or shrub that’s starting to look a bit more green than expected, or you’re not sure what needs removing, get in touch, I’m always happy to advise or take a look.

We rebuilt this client’s fence to replicate the original style you can see in the last photo. The site had a slope and a few hidden obstacles, so every section was measured and fitted to sit cleanly in the gap. Fencing supplies by Harvest Wood Products, Tilford.

Breathe deep, wisteria time!
The best blooms come from good pruning: summer for shaping, winter for cutting back. Both the quality and quantity of flowers depend on pruning at the right time.
