Blackhouse Hill, a new multi-residential development in Hythe, Kent.

A contemporary response that embraces the site’s steep and challenging terrain while capturing framed views of the sea.

Set on a sharply rising triangular plot that meets a former railway embankment, the scheme draws reference from the neighbouring Victorian houses while establishing its own modern character. Each home steps before the next, creating a cascading rhythm that maximises light, privacy, and connection to the horizon.

A defining feature is the dynamic roof form, each pitch folding subtly to allow sea views from the top bedrooms, shaping a distinctive silhouette along the hillside.

024 - Small House, Folkestone

Work in progress on our compact studio home — where internal levels terrace with the landscape, subtly defining spatial zones. We’re aiming to be on site this summer.

Jonathan Burlow Architects have been commissioned to design a new residential development in Hythe, Kent, embracing the steep and challenging landscape to create a new contemporary response.

The site comprises an approximately triangular parcel of land situated on the eastern side of Hill, rises from south to north and slopes up and away from the road, with a sharp rise upwards towards the northern and eastern boundaries of the site where it meets a former railway embankment.

There are existing residential dwellings immediately to the south and across the road to the west. The proposal aims to present itself as contemporary response, however very much in reference to the victorian houses along the street. Allowing the strategy of countering the site, and working hard to take advantage of views to the sea, forming the developments physical presence.

The architectural approach ensures that each home steps before the other, creating a cascading effect that maximises light, and privacy, whilst focusing on views to the sea. With one defining feature of the houses being a dynamic roof form, where one-half of the pitch steps back to allow the primary bedroom of the following house to have a clear view of the sea, by result developing a distinctive and contemporary silhouette.

Structural model
Scale: 1/20
Model material: Jesomite

Description: Facilitating a new way of living in an existing victorian terrace with a clear structural identity. The renovation and extension expresses the new concrete structure supporting the existing property above, while a certain transparency is given to the exterior envelope, creating a visual sense of balance between interior and exterior space.

The design for a new Multifunctional Hall has been unveiled in Kent. The hall encourages flexibility in use, sustainability and seamless integration with its environment. Wishing to have a space to provide a totally new, intimate and ever-changing encounter with the building, the resultant design is a place that provides an interplay between landscape, architecture and people. Conceived perhaps most notably as a place to meet, that feels inviting to all, promotes inclusivity and provides flexibility in use. The new building will act as a symbol or marker for the local community, today and for decades to come.

Beyond just portraying an architectural project through photography, there is sometimes the importance of telling a simple yet subtle contextual story and making analogies via the architectural images.

That’s the case of this diptych I have made for the ‘House With One Column’ by : on the left, the informal reference of a column from the local market in Faverhsam, on the right the concrete column of the project located near by.
