BUSINESS SERVICE UPDATE
Over the past two years, we have noticed a major dip in our own project conversion ratio. This will no doubt be mirrored throughout the country. The economic state of the UK has essentially made running a small construction company almost impossible to make a success of for the majority out there. I can only speak from the point of view of an all-trades service provider who uses subcontractors, and I know there are plenty of multi- and single-trade services out there who are smashing it đź‘Ź
With large building site work being squeezed, the residential sector has been flooded with new companies offering lower start-up pricing to compete, making it even harder to win projects. Lower pricing across the board, with companies taking on work just to get projects through the door, is killing the sector.
With all of this in mind, we are now making estimating and project cost planning a main service that we provide. We know all too well what it’s like to lose money on projects. It can sometimes feel like there’s an almost unspoken mutual agreement between a contractor and a homeowner that things just aren’t going to work out the way they should. We believe every higher-value project that requires planning should have an impartial estimator who can provide an accurate cost against the client’s requirements. If you’re willing to spend tens or even hundreds of thousands on your property, then surely getting an impartial estimate as a backup would be a small expense — rather than hoping for the lowest bidder to tell you what you want to hear. We cannot be caught up in a race to the bottom.
