Carluke Cores
The reactivation of Carluke’s Town Centre through the transformation of vacant and derelict buildings into social and cultural facilities, provides new opportunities for the local community.
Carluke is a town located in South Lanarkshire. Its proximity to both Glasgow and Edinburgh and its residential feel contributed to make Carluke a well-known commuting town.
Carluke Cores objective was to identify key projects to revitalise Carluke and to encourage the local community and residents of nearby settlements to actively use the town centre.
Together with a series of other projects led by the client, One Carluke, Carluke Cores focuses on the regeneration of the town centre through the development of proposals for the reuse of vacant buildings located in strategic locations.
The proposals for new uses and the architectural design of the disused buildings is shaped by the needs and aspirations of the local communities which have been identified via previous public consultations such as, for example, the Carluke Conversations.
We were recently commissioned to deliver a wide teaching RIBA Stage 2 feasibility study to exploring opportunities for retrofit first approaches to a series of buildings across the town centre.
These included options for a Food Hub & Co-working Space at a building on Chapel Street and an Eco Hub & Net Zero Showcase at the old High Mill House.
Supported by the Scottish Government Place Based Initiative Programme, this project exemplifies our approach to the built environment as a practice, exploring opportunities for the future with the ambition of identifying potential uses for derelict buildings and developing much needed facilities for the local community.

The nomination recognises the strength of the collaborative process between New Practice and Kinning Park Complex, from building and rebuilding a brief, to ongoing discussions around funding and future plans now the building has reopened; both sides have been able to take part in shared learning and a genuinely joyful working relationship and created an excellent and considered building as an outcome.
Wish us good luck! 🀞

Our friends and client at πŠπˆπππˆππ† ππ€π‘πŠ π‚πŽπŒππ‹π„π—]] has long been a champion of doing more with less, our approach to redevelopment matched this spirit.
As Lead Architect on the Β£2 million redevelopment of their old Edwardian school building in Glasgow, our sustainability goal was to reuse as much of the building fabric and finishes as possible.
Sustainability at πŠπˆπππˆππ† ππ€π‘πŠ π‚πŽπŒππ‹π„π—]] is about the building and its metrics as a way to bolster and support the social and cultural capital that the organisation has developed since first taking the keys to the building in 1996.
At New Practice we believe strongly in such adaptive reuse approaches, and look forward to attending the AJ Retrofit Live conference in London next week on Wed 23 Nov.
That same evening our work at πŠπˆπππˆππ† ππ€π‘πŠ π‚πŽπŒππ‹π„π—]] is nominated for Best Community & Faith Project at the 2022 AJ Awards… we’ve got our fingers crossed! 🀞

We’re excited to be collaborating with Many Studios] to design a Pocket Park for The Barras Market 🌱
β€’
Supported by and , the pocket park will transform an under-utilised portion of waste ground behind a car park into a new biodiverse gathering space for people (and wildlife)!
β€’
The project is being delivered on site as a live-build through the support of a group of tenants from Many Studios] alongside local residents and businesses.
β€’
The Pocket Park takes a reuse and recycle approach, avoiding the use of virgin materials where possible, and a bold use of colour to brighten up the currently drab site.
