The things that go into fitting a kitchen - Part 3

Apparently, rooms aren't made to measure for kitchens! So kitchens sometimes need to be tweaked to fit well in a room. What do I mean by this? Well, take this corner cupboard. At first sight, looks like it was made to measure. Look closer - there are some filler pieces - one to the left of the cupboard and one to the right. These also appear in the lower run of cupboards. These don't come flat packed with the cupboards, they're cut to fit on site, so that your final kitchen has a seamless appearance - made not to be noticed, but again, noteworthy!

The things that go into fitting a kitchen - Part 2

Here's another bit of kitchen I'd never really noticed before. These are end panels and AREN'T part of the cupboard. Who knew?! They fix to the cupboard casing to give a nice finish where the ends of the cupboards are exposed. They match the colour of the doors, so that your kitchen looks complete. Imagine if this was just left as a white cupboard exterior - it definitely wouldn't have the same appeal. These have to be cut to size and attached at exactly the right level to your end cupboards to give this 'part of the cupboard' look and feel. They aren't just used for wall cupboards, they're also used for floor standing cupboards at the end of a run too. And when this is the case, Rich takes care to find out what flooring will be used, so that he can either come back after the flooring has been fitted (giving a tiler an easier job - they don't then have to cut around an end panel), or take into account the final flooring level when he fits the end panel. Just another little detail I'd never have noticed.

The things that go into fitting a kitchen - Part 1

Ever noticed these bits? They're called deco strips and they get fitted to the top and bottom of all your wall cupboards. They 're there so that you're not just looking at the bottom of the cupboard casing, which is often just a white shell, when you cupboard doors might be blue, pink, grey, green or any other of a myriad of colours. These strips hide that white shell, giving your wall cupboards much more visual appeal. They can also hide under cabinet lighting and associated wiring. As far as I'm concerned, under cabinet lighting is a must. Overhead lighting is a must too, but often we stand in between what we're working on and overhead lighting, casting a shadow on our worktop. Under cabinet lighting shines directly on our worktop, making it much easier to dish up with a flourish / open a tin of beans.

These deco strips come in long lengths and need to be cut to size to match your wall cabinets, and then fixed in place and to each other. And yet, they often go unnoticed. I thought they deserved some attention :)"

Hi - I'm Annie - half of FITTED WELL (the lesser seen half!) I'm Rich's wife and have a varied job description - largely to do with communications, but also including heavy lifting and being an occasional sounding board. At home I am head of colours, interior design and ideas. Rich has the job of making my visions happen and he's bloody good at it. Together we make a good team at most things we tackle. We've done up two houses together and are on our third. Personally, I'm in awe of what Rich does with kitchens. Before I watched him fit our kitchen, I thought it was just a case of putting some flat pack together, shoving it into place and finishing off with worktop. It's not. There's so much more that goes into it that I'd never even considered or noticed. I'll be introducing you to some of those bits over the next few posts.

Here he is - the man himself - this is your kitchen fitter Rich. He loves all things sport and power tool related and playing PUBG on his Xbox. At home he's head of making ideas happen and detail. His soundtrack of choice is Queen and you'll probably hear him belting out a few hits during your fit out! He loves biscuits, and while most people might admit that one is never enough, meaning one biscuit - he means one packet of biscuits. He drinks hot water or cold water with ice and is fond of a Co-op lunch deal. So, now you know how to keep your kitchen fitter happy!
