As we step into March here in the UK, many of us feel the pull toward that first tidy-up of the lawn. The light is shifting, the days are stretching… it’s tempting to reach for the mower.
Before you do, here’s what’s happening right now in the grass beneath your feet — the very life my work at Derek’s Daughter Does is all about protecting and celebrating...

🌿 Derek’s Daughter Does: Winter Care With Purpose
January in the garden isn’t a pause — it’s a quiet act of protection.
While the world slows down, so many tiny lives are sheltering in the stems, leaves, and hidden corners we choose to leave untouched.
I garden with the seasons, not against them. This month, I'm honouring the unseen work of winter by keeping vital habitats in place:

✨ Standing seed heads left for shelter and food

✨ Leaf litter tucked under shrubs

✨ Perennial stems left standing

✨ A loose, cosy brush pile

✨ Old wood and stumps kept in place

✨ Garden beds left with their natural winter debris

These small choices create safe havens for bees, butterflies, beetles, and all the quiet helpers who’ll return the favour come spring.

A wilder winter garden isn’t untidy — it’s intentional, patient care.
And that’s exactly what Derek’s Daughter Does

🌷 Extending Your Garden Bloom with the Lasagna Bulb Method
Why replant every year when you can enjoy a continuous show? My video clip shows the simple, sustainable method of lasagna planting using saved bulbs from last season!
Recycle and Reuse: Saving Your Bulbs
First, let's talk sustainability. I replanted a beautiful mix of tulips, daffodils, and Narcissus—all bulbs my client saved from last year. This is a crucial step for frugal and eco-conscious gardening. By carefully storing healthy bulbs (after the foliage dies back) and replanting them, you reduce waste and save money.
The Layering Secret: Extended Color
The "lasagna" method is simple: think of a layered cake of bulbs and soil. I plant the bulbs in tiers, with the largest and latest-blooming varieties (like tulips) at the bottom, and earlier or smaller ones (like daffodils and Narcissus) layered closer to the top.
The key benefit? Because they are planted at different depths, the bulbs will naturally emerge and flower at different times next spring. This layering technique ensures your garden stays vibrant with color for weeks instead of just a single burst!
