A beautiful Victorian sampler dated 1830 and sourced locally from a village in the Ribble valley. This has been lovingly worked, with lots of detail. There are birds, people, trees and animals. The motto is religious, I get the feeling Margaret was a fairly serious 12 year old The wool has maintained it’s colour and it is framed in an plain oak Edwardian frame. I collect needlework but sadly haven’t room for anymore. So, before I get too attached I’m going to let her go and be enjoyed by someone else. There has been some slight bleeding of colour on some of the lettering but this is historic and does not detract.

I’m reading so many posts about taking down Christmas decorations and we have not yet seen in the new year ! While I’m off work and can enjoy them I’m going to make the most of it. I was lucky enough to be given this book for Christmas by my lovely friend JuJu. I took some time out this morning to start reading it and I was totally engrossed. The illustrations are just beautiful and the sentiment is too. I got to this page and started to cry. It made me realise that for all the things we have missed this year, a hug is probably the thing I’ve missed most. Suffering from anxiety is never easy it’s not something that is quickly fixed and sorted, you have to work on it and manage it. Some days are a write off and some days you win the battle but not the war. A hug is often for me a reassurance that everything is ok and that ‘we are good’ . Anxiety can make you think you’ve done something to upset someone when you’ve done nothing at all. A simple hug is the confirmation we need at that moment. With some friends it is the recognition that although we haven’t seen or heard each other for an age we still have that bond that we have always had. I’m sorry but the virtual hug is pointless, it doesn’t let you feel the energy and love of each other, the unspoken concern or the opening for them wanting you to ask if they are ok? So much is transmitted through a hug.
We have to beat the bastard virus! We have to reclaim our lives and our spirits even if it is for the sake of hugs ...

Christmas Eve is magical my favourite day of the whole of Christmas. It’s the anticipation I think, and the ritual of cooking a ham and braised red cabbage, the first of the feasts of Yule ! Listening to the carol service from kings was a perfect afternoon with the chapel sounding empty as it was just the choir this year,beautiful as their voices sounded as if they were climbing to heaven ! And the thunderous organ heralding in the sacred season. Whatever shape your Christmas Eve has taken this year I wish you much joy and peace on this most clear and calm of evenings. I hear that in wales they are to sing silent night on their doorsteps as an act of solidarity and togetherness, a beautiful idea from the land of song. As is my insta tradition this is the first of my table settings this season, sadly only taking half the time because we have folks missing ! A medieval feast on the Eve of Christmas! Crowns, coronets and candles ! Blessed be and stay safe 🙏🏻

We are ready, the clean up has been done and the guest room prepared, new bed linen and fresh flowers to follow. Preparing for Christmas is sometimes the best bit, anticipation and excitement with a huge amount of satisfaction when you see the results of your labours. I’ve been thinking about what I would do if I was alone, I did spend Christmas alone once in a little cottage at the foot of a great hill. It was exactly what I needed, it was total immersion in ones own needs and wants, which sounds selfish, but sometimes self investment is time well spent. We both know that here and spend time ‘alone’ doing our own thing. A snooze, reading, Instagram ! I’m usually to be found creating something that has to be done at that moment (self investment). Peace is everything, we’ve just sat down in the sitting room dogs at the other end of the house having a post breakfast snooze. And a beautiful robin arrived and sat in our holly tree singing his heart out. It was magical truly beautiful. These things are the really valuable moments, that fill ones emotional reserve to carry on and have the Christmas you may not have chosen but that is centred around you...

Good afternoon! Since yesterday’s post in which I was a bit uncomfortable posting around Christmas, I’ve had some lovely messages saying that you’re enjoying seeing my squares and reading my diatribe and not to stop. So I won’t and I will continue to chart our Christmas here at Ruskin House. This is probably my last purchase this year from FB marketplace, these were produced back in the late 80’s and I couldn’t resist the campness of it, those fat little cherubs and those oversized tassels had to be mine. Obvs I have an issue with faux greenery and seemed to have amassed a huge array, so it would be rude not to festive this up a bit and Chuck a few lights at it ! This is the door to nowhere but I like the panels and I’d never block it up completely in case we have a change about and want to reopen it. We are mostly sorted for the festivities albeit scaled back. We are doing the normal tip runs and sorting S prior to filling the house with more stuff ! Hope your Monday is filled with nice thoughts and joy! Take care and keep safe !
