“Show bee the money!” 🐝💵

The Buff-tailed bumblebee has made the shortlist to feature on the new banknotes – and you can help make it happen!

One of the UK’s most common bumblebees, this iconic insect would serve as a symbol for all 24 of our bumblebee species and the many other pollinators we rely on.

Here’s why we should celebrate them on the new Bank of England notes:

🍅 Bumblebees are essential for pollinating many of our wildflowers and crops, including lots of fruits and vegetables. In the UK, they’re the only insects that can pollinate tomato plants.
💵 Buff-tailed bumblebee queens – the largest in the UK – can weigh up to 0.85g ... exactly the same as a £10 note!
🌾 It would cost roughly £1.8 billion to replace the role pollinators play in farming with hand pollination. Without bumblebees, many of the food we eat would become harder to grow and more expensive to buy.

Tree Focus…
May Tree (Hawthorn)
The May Tree is a British native tree that is steeped in history and folklore. Its name refers to the time of year it is usually in flower; pink buds open to white blossom in May followed by dark red berries in autumn. It is the precursor to the maypole; ribbons and decorations would have been hung from the branches on May Day (or Beltane) and people would have danced around the trunk. The tree was a pagan symbol of fertility and features in many stories of faeries where it was believed that the trees were entrances into the faery realm. The blossoms of the tree were often used to decorate the outside of houses - but never indoors - it was believed that to bring hawthorn blossoms into the house would invite illness and death! The leaves of the tree were often eaten and known as ‘bread and cheese’ although having never tried them myself I can’t say whether or not they taste like a cheese sandwich! The berries are used to make haw-jelly; a condiment similar to redcurrant jelly to serve with meat. In the countryside hawthorn is a common hedge plant, popular with livestock farmers for its thorny branches that when laid were the original barbed wire fence. In the garden they can make a handsome specimen tree with a compact shape (making them good for small gardens) and the blossom and berries providing not only interest but also food for pollinating insects and birds.

Hope for Britain’s Ash trees thanks to scientific ‘eureka’ moment

This was an interesting one. A naturalistic garden planted with wildlife friendly plants using the ‘hardcore gardening’ technique. This technique is a variation on gravel gardening using a thick layer of either crushed hardcore, crushed brick or in this case sharp sand, spread over the soil. The plants are planted into this layer of material. The roots of the plants grow down through the layer of sand to the soil underneath and the sand acts as a free-draining mulch which suits dry climate plants and wild flowers. Eventually the plants here will spread and seed over the layer of sand and it will become hidden. For the moment though the client is enjoying how it reminds them of a “Californian garden”!
