In a small powder room, every centimetre has to earn its place.

Before selecting the marble, mirror or brassware, the layout had to be resolved. Moving the doorway created enough room for a comfortable vanity area and wall-hung WC, while the tall cabinetry uses the room’s height to provide storage without taking up valuable floor space.

The finishes were then chosen to make the room feel cohesive. The marble continues from the vanity into the splashback, the metal details are repeated throughout, and the Shaker-style panelling brings depth and a more classic character to the space.

The lesson is simple: a compact bathroom does not need fewer ideas. It needs better decisions, made in the right order.

A mood board can communicate how a space should look and feel. What it cannot do is tell the team on site exactly how to build it.

To turn an idea into a successful finished space, the design needs to be properly resolved through accurate measurements, detailed layouts, elevations, material specifications and clear coordination between every trade involved.

Without that information, important decisions are often left until construction has already started. That is when misunderstandings, delays, compromises and expensive rework begin.

Technical design is not about making a project more complicated. It is about removing uncertainty before the work begins.

Because a beautiful idea is only valuable when it can be delivered properly.

A bold bathroom does not have to feel overwhelming.

The key is knowing where to use colour and where to let the space breathe.

Here, the blue scallop tiles create a strong focal point across the bathing wall, then reappear behind the basin to connect both sides of the room. The soft grey walls, white surfaces and simple dark fittings keep the rest of the design calm and balanced.

With a patterned tile like this, the technical details matter too. The tile layout, grout lines, niche position and cuts around each fitting all need to be planned before installation. When those details align properly, the pattern feels continuous rather than interrupted.

An expensive product cannot fix an unbalanced bathroom.

The generous island brings preparation, cooking, storage and seating together in one central space—making it easier to stay connected while meals are being prepared.

A dedicated drinks cooler positioned away from the main working area is another thoughtful detail. It allows guests to help themselves without interrupting the person cooking, helping the kitchen flow more naturally when entertaining.

The dark cabinetry adds depth, while the light veined surfaces, pale flooring and natural light keep the room feeling balanced and open.

A cohesive kitchen does not mean every cabinet has to match.

Here, classic white cabinetry creates a calm backdrop, while the warm timber drawers and island introduce a more contemporary, furniture-like feel.

What makes the combination work is repetition. The timber appears across the cabinetry, open shelf and flooring, while the light stone continues from the worktops to the splashback and waterfall island. Brass details then connect the different elements throughout the space.

The lesson? When mixing materials or styles, choose a few consistent details to tie everything together. That is what makes the result feel intentional rather than disconnected.

One ceiling light may brighten a kitchen, but that does not mean it has been lit properly.

A successful lighting plan uses different layers for different purposes:

General lighting allows you to move through the room comfortably.
Task lighting gives you clear visibility where you prepare, cook and clean.
Softer accent lighting adds warmth, depth and atmosphere.

The key is to plan these layers alongside the cabinetry and electrical layout—not after the kitchen has already been installed. This ensures that fittings, switches and lighting positions work with the way the space will actually be used.

Before finalising your kitchen design, map out where you will prepare food, cook, wash, dine and entertain. Each area should have lighting designed around its function.

Because a kitchen can look beautiful during the day and still feel completely wrong at night.
