One of my favourite space-saving sowing tricks for packing loads into a small space.
Rather than filling the greenhouse with individual pots, I sow lots of runner beans together in one large pot and let them grow on until they have a good root system.
Then I simply tip the whole lot out, gently tease the seedlings apart and choose the strongest plants to grow on.
At this stage they can be potted up individually, planted straight into the ground if the weather is good, or passed on to fellow gardeners on my plant stall.
I use this method for runner beans, climbing French beans and dwarf French beans. It saves a huge amount of space and means I can raise far more plants than I could otherwise.
Beans are much tougher than people look and, as you can see, separate really easily when theyâre young.
These are actually some of the same runner beans my seed club members are sowing at the moment, so itâll be interesting to see how everyoneâs crops compare later in the summer.
Whoâs growing beans this year? đą
