🌳 Is your garden ready for hotter, drier summers?

Climate change is already affecting our trees, with prolonged dry spells placing increasing stress on even mature, established specimens. The good news is that there are practical steps that can help improve tree resilience and protect these valuable assets for years to come.

Our drought-proofing service focuses on:
✅ Improving soil health and moisture retention
✅ Reducing soil compaction around root zones
✅ Mulching to conserve water and regulate soil temperature
✅ Encouraging healthy root development
✅ Enhancing soil biology and nutrient uptake
✅ Long-term climate resilience planning

Many tree losses can be prevented with the right management and early intervention.

We are now taking bookings for on-site assessments and drought-proofing recommendations for garden trees.

At Heritage Tree Services, sourcing exceptional trees is about far more than simply placing an order. It’s about building relationships, understanding quality at every stage, and ensuring we can offer our clients the very best solutions for their projects.

Recently, our Managing Director travelled to Holland to visit a number of leading European tree nurseries — spending time discussing cultivation methods, transportation logistics, future availability, climate change and the specific requirements of both domestic and commercial projects here in the UK.

From striking mature specimens and architectural topiary to large semi-mature trees with impressive root systems, these visits allow us to inspect stock first-hand and work closely with growers to ensure the highest standards are maintained from nursery to final planting.

Trips like these are an important part of what we do. They give us the opportunity to stay at the forefront of the industry, strengthen long-standing supplier relationships, and continue offering clients access to an extensive range of high-quality trees and specialist planting solutions.

Whether it’s a private garden transformation, a large-scale landscaping scheme, or a commercial development, we’re proud to offer a service that combines expertise, sourcing capability, and attention to detail at every step.

🌳 Getting Irrigation Right for Newly Planted Trees

One of the most common reasons newly planted trees struggle isn’t poor planting—it’s poor watering. Planting a tree is only the first step. What happens in the weeks and months afterwards plays a huge part in how well that tree establishes.

When a tree is transplanted, it loses a significant portion of its root system. Until new roots grow into the surrounding soil, the tree is heavily reliant on regular watering.

For the first couple of years, that tree is focused on re-establishing roots rather than putting on lots of visible growth. During this time, consistent watering is essential.

How Irrigation Helps
The aim is to deliver water slowly and directly to the root ball, where the tree needs it most.

A quick spray with a hose often wets only the surface, encouraging shallow roots. Slow, deep watering helps roots grow down into the soil, creating a stronger, more resilient tree.

💧 The goal is simple: deliver water slowly and directly to the root ball, where it is needed most.

Common Irrigation Options for New Trees:
• Watering bags that release water gradually over several hours
• Perforated irrigation pipes installed around the root ball
• Drip irrigation systems for larger planting schemes
• Slow hose watering applied directly to the base of the tree

Each method can be highly effective when used consistently.

Why It Matters
A tree may look healthy when it is first planted, but the real work is happening below ground. Proper irrigation helps reduce transplant shock, encourages root establishment, and gives the tree the strongest possible start.

This tree here shows a typical irrigation setup, with a perforated pipe positioned around the root ball to ensure water reaches exactly where it is needed.

If you’re planning a tree planting project or have a young tree that doesn’t seem to be thriving, Heritage Tree Services can help with practical advice, planting and aftercare.

🌳 Moving giants—before machines did the heavy lifting for us!

These incredible archive images show how large trees were carefully relocated long before modern hydraulics and specialist transporters.

Using ingenuity, teamwork, and sheer physical effort, crews would dig, wrap, brace, and move entire mature trees—often with nothing more than timber frames, rope systems, and horsepower (in the most literal sense).

It’s a reminder that tree moving isn’t new—it’s a craft with deep roots.

At Heritage Tree Services, we’re proud to carry that legacy forward. Today, alongside that same care and respect for each tree, we operate a fleet of specialist tree-moving vehicles—including the largest in the UK —allowing us to relocate even the most mature specimens safely and successfully.

Sometimes looking back reminds you just how far the industry has come and how much of it still relies on patience, precision and skill.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about giving established trees a second life 🌳

This week we’ve been carrying out specialist tree relocation work at a private estate, carefully moving mature specimens to new positions within the grounds. Tree relocation isn’t just about digging and lifting; it’s about precision planning, protecting root systems, understanding soil conditions and ensuring each tree has the very best chance to thrive in its new home.

Using our purpose-built tree moving machinery, we’re able to relocate substantial trees efficiently and safely, minimising disruption to the surrounding landscape while maintaining the integrity of the root ball. The right equipment makes all the difference — allowing us to handle large-scale moves with accuracy, speed and care.

If you’re planning a redesign, development, or simply want to retain valuable mature trees rather than remove them, professional relocation can be a sustainable and cost-effective solution.

Get in touch to discuss your project — we’re always happy to advise.

Historic scene from Windsor Great Park — rows of elms felled along the Long Walk with Windsor Castle beyond.

Dutch elm disease didn’t just change rural hedgerows; it altered some of the country’s most recognisable views.

A stark reminder of why long-term management, monitoring and biosecurity remain so important.

This week, one of our teams ventured into the bustling city to conduct facilitation pruning, ensuring the safe transfer of the Lord Byron Statue to Hyde Park.

Lord Byron (1788 – 1824) was a celebrated English romantic poet and a prominent figure in the Romantic movement. In early 1824, he joined the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire, ultimately perishing while leading a campaign at the age of 36. Byron opposed Lord Elgin's removal of the Parthenon marbles from Athens and is held in high regard by Greece. Renowned worldwide, the idea of a ‘Byronic hero’ embodies an idealized yet flawed persona characterized by talent, passion, disdain for society and its institutions, disregard for rank and privilege, rebellion, a hidden troubled past, arrogance, and a self-destructive nature. The UK Byron Society was revived in 1971, and there are now 36 Byron Societies globally, hosting an international conference each year.

Crafted in 1880 by sculptor Richard Belt, the statue rests on a Greek red and white marble pedestal, a gift from the Greek Government. Byron is portrayed alongside his Newfoundland dog, Boatswain (Bo’sun). This is the sole public statue of Lord Byron in England, and Queen Victoria authorised its installation in Hamilton Gardens, once part of Hyde Park's southeast corner.

During the 1960's, the expansion of Park Lane into a three-lane dual carriageway extended over Hyde Park’s eastern roadway, shifting the park's boundary westward. Consequently, the statue became isolated on the southernmost traffic island, encircled by barriers and fast-moving traffic, inaccessible to the public and removed from a garden environment. With 2024 marking 200 years since Byron's death, the Byron Society and its President, Lord Byron, successfully advocated for its relocation.

The statue will be moved to a newly landscaped spot in Hyde Park, strategically positioned at a major entry and exit point.

Planting trees successfully requires more than just placing a tree in the ground. Choosing the appropriate tree species, assessing soil conditions, determining accurate spacing and ensuring continuous care are crucial for trees to flourish over time.

At Heritage Tree Services, our tree planting method is thoughtful, efficient, and sustainability-focused. We plant anything from young saplings to fully grown trees in a variety of settings. Here are some examples of the mature trees we have recently planted.
