Sensory-aware design I have a degree in interior design and a postgraduate diploma in furniture design, but spent the last 13 years teaching and just doing interiors for family and friends. After renovating and selling my own flat in 2020, I was approached to

update the interior of another house and that's where the Interior Design Nook started. I've worked on quite an eclectic range of homes since then both local to me on the Welsh border, and further afield from Liverpool to Munich! It's such a privilege to be invited into people's homes I can't wait to help more people make the most of their spaces! I'm based in Herefordshire near Hay on Wye, but I work with clients all over the UK and abroad. My strengths lie in using space effectively and coming up with creative solutions for tricky areas, as well as sourcing great pieces and spending your budget wisely to make your home feel special and look high-end. I create liveable (and durable!) interiors without compromising on aesthetics. I offer a range of services including full design, spatial planning, colour consultation, and commissions for custom products and artwork. I have over 50 trade discounts to offer my clients on their interior purchases, including kitchen and bathroom suppliers. I am also a proud member of the Interior Designers Hub.

Many interior designers will tell you that programmes like Interior Design Masters don't reflect what we do day to day.

They're right.

But in my own home, I still paint, upholster, make curtains and build bespoke furniture. Did I ever mention I have a postgrad diploma in furniture design 😃 Understanding how things are made and installed makes me a better designer and helps me create homes that work beautifully in practice, not just on paper.

With the recent swing from glorious sunshine to dramatic thunderstorms, I've gone from kicking the duvet off to adding an extra layer in one week! One of my favourite bedroom tips is to keep the duvet plain and let the accessories do the seasonal legwork. A good quality plain duvet is practical and gives you endless freedom to introduce colour, pattern and texture in cushions and quilts in line with the weather.

One of my favourite parts of developing a scheme is seeing how colour begins to connect across a project, weaving through different materials which change subtly in tone and depth, gradually creating something that feels layered, characterful and cohesive.

Some of the most interesting schemes are also the most complex. Keeping them balanced rarely comes from repeating exactly the same colours throughout, but from varying the hue, intensity and shade of each colour so the palette develops naturally from room to room without ever feeling flat or overly controlled.

A few thoughts from a current project where we’ve been refining the palette room by room.

Natural materials do need a little care. Timber floors need oiling, unlacquered brass needs polishing, limestone benefits from sealing, and marble will inevitably etch and mark over time. They ask to be lived with rather than kept pristine.

You can refinish a scratched wooden floor, breathe new life into a worn piece of furniture by waxing it, or reupholster a good sofa frame for another generation of use. Even stone develops character through wear. Natural materials evolve with age, recording the story of the lives unfolding around them rather than simply deteriorating.

Many synthetic alternatives don’t age in the same way. Over time they become tatty and if damaged, often can’t be restored, only replaced.

I’d always rather design a home that can absorb the knocks of everyday life gracefully than one that has to stay untouched to look good.

A bed nook is such a lovely way to turn an awkward space into something rather special. This one was a real team effort - from building a frame around the wonkiest of walls and ceilings, to fitting a blind below head-height without exposing the mechanism. The bed curtains were lined in the same fabric as the wallpaper and headboard, with the heading carefully designed to look beautiful from both sides, and the lampshades were bespoke made with trim and flex to match the headboard piping.

I’m excited to share the next chapter of the studio.

What began as a small, passion-led business has grown into a practice working on deeply considered homes across the UK and Europe. As the work has evolved, so too has the studio, and it now feels like the right moment for the name to reflect the personal, hands-on approach behind every project.

Going forward, The Interior Design Nook will become Minnie Claridge Design.

This isn’t a change in direction, but a natural evolution: the same values, the same attention to detail, and the same love for creating timeless, thoughtful interiors, now under a name that more closely reflects the designer at the heart of the work.

Thank you to every client, collaborator and supporter who has been part of the journey so far. I’m very much looking forward to what comes next!
