Happy early autumn interest this week in one of my gardens. is still going strong at this time of the year, with some young flowers alongside others well into their colour transformation. It’s worth deadheading the and throughout the season as it prolongs their flowering that little bit longer. Looks like summer have not quite left us yet😎🌸

I’m thrilled to have been shortlisted for this award, with the garden seen on the next photo. The winners will be announced on 21/11 at a ceremony in London😬🤞. Huge thanks to for his beautiful nighttime shots and to the wonderful clients who made it all possible. Last but not least, to John, Pete and Dan for the hard landscaping. Great job!

The last hurrah! is the last bulb to bloom in this garden this year, part of a succession that started in late January/Feb with snowdrops, followed by daffodils, Fritillaria persica, a variety of tulips, Camassia cusikii and Nectaroscordum siculum. are an essential element in a planting scheme if you want continuous interest, and colour through the seasons.

Mushroom picking is in theory coming to an end, but the mild and wet conditions have made for a longer and plentiful season. These are the fruits of a foraging expedition in a stunning forest in Hertfordshire, with experts this weekend. The consequent wild mushroom risotto was epic😋.

I just love how the leaves of the Salvia ‘Amistad’ seem to be suspended in the air and popping out of the brick wall, and how the various purple flowers connect with the autumnal leaf colour of the . A pleasing combination of textures and colours, extending interest into autumn, in this ongoing restoration project we began in 2020.

Another project finished in spring/early summer 2022. The brief was for a calm, sheltered space to escape to and for entertaining. Timeless, contemporary, with planting that was simple-at-heart but had structure and a subtle nod to the subtropical. Last photo is the ‘before’ image. It was a pleasure to work with clients that were keen to keep the build sustainable. Between all of us we donated as much of the old stuff and existing materials (including the patio paving) as possible; all existing plants that were suitable for the new scheme were kept and replanted; materials were carefully quantified to avoid too much waste and unnecessary cost to the client; and the vast majority of the waste generated through the build was green and/or recyclable, which was taken away by a skip company that claims to recycle 98% of the waste. Working in this manner takes a bit more organising, but we all bear the responsibility to make positive changes to be more sustainable, and the result feels very special - the more so because the rewards far outweigh the efforts.

This garden was turned into a blank canvas and planted from scratch this spring. But on the shady boundary, this previous resident - Enchanter’s nightshade- soon made a return, and I think it fits beautifully into the new scheme. I love how its little white flowers light up this shady area and in particular how they stand out against the dark fence. They also match the Heuchera flowers quite closely, so they make perfect companions. The general consensus is that this is a w**d. But a w**d is just a wild plant growing where it is not wanted. I do like it there, it looks good and I want it, so it’s not a w**d to me. At least for now🤨… **ds
