We lost a very fine framer this year. Just two weeks ago in fact.
As I waited for the rain to stop long enough to glue up the last pair of barge boards so I could finish for the year, I remembered that this frame contains what I am fairly confident is the most flawless piece of oak I will ever encounter. The only blemish along its four metre length is one tiny knot the size of a pinhead.
It’s perfectly square, perfectly straight, planed all round and, happily, is the full height central post of this glazed gable cross frame. I think anyone would struggle find a nicer piece of wood.
You’ll have seen on previous posts the mark I like to leave on my frames, a little symbol that means something to me and marks them as mine. But on the cleanest, neatest, nicest piece of timber I have ever seen, it feels fitting that my mark should be dedicated to the carpenter who fits the same description. As true a glimpse of perfection as I could ever hope to get. Rest in Peace Tom. It was a pleasure and a privilege to have worked with you.
