This month's speaker, on Tuesday 13th January, is Russell Attwood talking about “No Dig Gardening”.

He has tended a large allotment for over 30 years. He has over 10 years of experience as a popular speaker to many gardening clubs. With a degree in crop science, his specialities are no-dig gardening, pumpkins and squashes and soil improvement. He has now retired from teaching Biology, after 39 years, so has a wealth of experience in engaging an audience.
Russell has been to us before to give a very memorable talk on Pumpkins and Squashes when he had us all singing Pumpkin related songs!!

The speaker on 9th December will be Jim Payne whose talk will be on The Secret Life of Plants
Jim runs the 20 year old Walnut Tree Garden Nursery, in Attleborough, which has approx 1200 to 1500 plants- only available online. They specialise in roses, flowering crab apples and dogwoods.
We will be having mince pies or biscuits as well as a competition for a Table Top Festive Table display with prizes!

There will be a short AGM followed by a delightfully social evening including a some fun competitions.

🔔Ringing the Changes - Bell Flowers🔔
14th October 2025
Our next meeting will feature a talk by Dr Andrew Ward on bell flowers.

This talk will look at many plants which have the beautiful simplicity of a Bell shaped flower from the graceful carillons of Dierma (Angel's Fishing Rods) to the , and of course . It also includes bulbs, a few alpines, lots of and even the odd Clematis, with guides of how to grow them all.
Andrew lectures throughout the country at prestigious events such as The Hardy Plant Society Autumn Weekends and National Annual General Meetings as well as regional Hardy Plant Societies, regional NCCPG groups, local gardening groups, florist groups and WI's. He was awarded the prestigious RHS’s Alan Bloom award in recognition of his services to herbaceous perennials in 2025.
He trained as a Plant Breeder and started Norwell Nurseries and Gardens ( on Instagram) 31 years ago with his wife Helen. The garden holds over 2,500 different varieties of plant and has featured in many magazines including Country Living, Gardens Illustrated, and the RHS Garden magazine. It has been been included since 2013 in the highly prestigious publication Great Gardens to Visit. It is renowned for the National Collection of that can be seen in autumn. It will include a fabulous talk on Dahlias by Kim O'Brien
Kim O’Brien is the Head Gardener at an RHS-funded garden in Cambridgeshire. She is also a flower grower and a floral designer at a top studio in Cambridge and has hosted floristry workshops for BBC Gardeners World since 2023. She will be at this year's Autumn Show at Audley End (29-31 August 2025).
Kim has a passion for dahlias and she now boasts a collection of over 200 varieties at her home, field and allotment. Kim’s success as a flower grower has catapulted her to expert status in the area of dahlias in recent years. With a passion to share her garden knowledge and expertise with other gardeners, Kim has written and curated her own ‘how to’ course, helping dahlia growers and providing step by step guidance on how to get the best from these fascinating blooms.

On Saturday 9th August, we'll be hoping for sunshine, and giving out the prizes for heaviest crop, heaviest single potato and longest runner bean.
84 club members have been lovingly growing their crops in the hope of winning a prize.
There will be refreshments and the Ukelele Band as well.
Members should have received an email with details of the afternoon which can also be found on the club website.

about recycling?
Interested in learning more about recycling?

The July meeting will be a bit different! Club members will work in groups focusing on recycling, with a special emphasis on composting.
There will also be a mini competition - bring along something creative made from recycled materials, so let your imagination run wild!
Jonathan Crisp, Recycling Officer from Cambridgeshire County Council, will join us to explain what can go in our blue bins, whether there's more we could be recycling, and what happens to our waste next.
