The Chaps brand was launched by Ralph Lauren in 1978 (or as early as 1974 according to some sources) as an entry-level "diffusion line" to offer more affordable, mass-market alternatives to the premium Polo label.
Historically, Chaps jumpers and other apparel were designed to capture the classic American preppy aesthetic—including nautical themes and collegiate styles—while being accessible through department stores rather than high-end boutiques.
