Different was the starting point.

When we first visited, the homeowner was clear that they didn’t want a standard approach. A flat roof can work beautifully for an extension, and we’ve designed plenty of them, but this project needed something with more character.

We explored a vaulted roof with glazing into an apex, paired with a contrasting exterior finish. That decision gave the extension its identity, brought more daylight into the kitchen and helped make the most of the views across the fields.

For us, the process is about understanding what someone likes, why they like it and why it matters to them. That is what makes the design feel right.

Daylight needs planning early.

When a kitchen extension makes the room larger, it is worth thinking about how far natural light will reach into the new space.

On this project, each opening has a different role. The large rear window frames the garden, the bifold doors create a wide connection to the outside, and the rooflights help carry daylight further into the kitchen and dining area.

Those openings also need the right structural support. We’re designing and supporting the rear and side extension, along with the extension foundations, so the light, layout and structure are considered together from the start.

The hidden work matters most.

This two-storey side extension started with a clear brief: another bedroom upstairs, more living space, and a flexible downstairs area with a toilet.

Once excavation began, the existing foundations were found to be much deeper than expected. With nearby sewers also limiting the options, the foundation design needed further structural input before the build could move forward.

Our design team, structural engineers and building contractor coordinated within the HAC group to develop a reinforced concrete solution specific to the site. It brought extra cost and significant delays, which had to be worked through carefully with the homeowner, but it was essential to making the extension possible.

You will not see this part in the finished rooms, but it is what allows everything above it to work.

Not sure where to start?

Before drawings come into it, we usually begin by talking through what is not working in the home as it is now. That might be a kitchen that feels cut off, a lack of storage, or a dining table that has slowly become a workspace.

Budget is another important early conversation. It does not need to be an exact figure straight away, but a realistic range helps us understand which options are worth exploring.

The next part is priorities. If everything cannot happen at once, it helps to know what matters most, whether that is another bedroom, a better family space, or bringing in more daylight.

You do not need all the answers at the beginning.

A renovation brief can evolve.

We’re in Wokingham, where a full home renovation is still underway. This project began with early conversations about what could be done with the property, before developing into a full design and build package.

As ideas change during a project, each decision needs to be considered properly. That means looking at the layout, the structure, the work already happening on site, and what any changes could mean for cost and timing.

Having our structural and build teams involved together helps us work through those decisions as the project moves forward.

The right scope matters.

This project started with several ideas on the table, including a two-storey extension and a loft conversion.

Once we looked at those options against the homeowner’s budget, the proposal became more focused: internal renovations and a new roof, with the main investment going into the kitchen, family space and somewhere to work.

The final spend did increase when the kitchen and internal finishes were upgraded, so this was not about bringing everything in under budget. It was about understanding the choices properly before committing to them.

That is often where the most useful decisions are made.

A kitchen should fit the home.

This three-storey property had a kitchen that felt restricted for its size, so the side extension was used to create a much larger kitchen and dining space.

The new layout includes a central island, rooflights to draw daylight further into the room, and a stronger connection to the garden through the large rear window and bi-fold doors.

The homeowner already had an initial design in place when we joined the project. Our role was to take it through planning, develop the technical information and coordinate the structural design.

If a kitchen feels out of step with the rest of the home, it is worth understanding what is not working before deciding how much space to add.

Not every extension should feel boxy.

For this Wokingham home, the starting point was simple: the rear extension needed to feel connected, open and shaped around the views, rather than added on as a plain box.

The existing kitchen was a good size, but it sat apart from the rest of the home. By introducing a single-storey rear extension with vaulted glass elements, we could bring in natural daylight and open the space up towards the fields beyond.

The kitchen island now works alongside the dining area, so cooking and family time sit together in one shared space. A flush threshold helps the transition from inside to garden feel much more connected.

Outside, the contrasting finish gives the extension its own character, while a separate garden office behind the garage creates a space to work away from family life.

It starts with understanding what needs to work better.

Most people assume an architect's job ends where the builder's job begins.

In reality, fixing a bad layout happens on paper long before anyone picks up a sledgehammer.

For this project, the family came to us wanting to unlock their loft, converting it into a playroom to maximise space, but they already had their own build team lined up.
