We attended a property in Shawlands that had signs of rising damp affecting the wall behind a home office door.

Moisture had travelled up through the wall and started damaging the plaster, which had to be removed before the area could be treated properly.

Our team installed a new damp proof course, treated the masonry to deal with salts left behind by the damp, and reinstated the wall using renovation plaster ready for the final skim finish.

Everything is now drying out as it should and will be ready for redecoration in the coming weeks.

Rising damp is usually caused by an issue with the damp-proof course - whether it’s failed over time, been bridged or simply isn’t doing its job anymore. As the moisture rises, it can start affecting plaster, paintwork and flooring inside the home.

A few common signs we often see:
✅ Marks or staining on lower walls
✅ Wallpaper peeling near skirting boards
✅ Plaster starting to crumble or break away
✅ Skirting boards or flooring feeling soft or damaged

If you’ve spotted any of these around your home, it’s always best to get it looked at sooner rather than later. Visit our website now to learn more about the signs of rising damp: https://www.mathesondampservices.co.uk/our-services/condensation-and-mould/

How bad is damp in a property?🏡💧

Damp is more than just a mark on a wall. Over time, it can affect plaster, flooring, ceilings, timber and even carpets, furniture and clothing.

It can also create the conditions for mould growth and other moisture-related problems within the property.

The important thing is understanding what’s causing it. In some cases it’s minor, in others it can point to a bigger issue developing behind the surface.

If you’ve noticed signs of damp in your home, get in touch with us now. It’s important to deal with it early before the issue spreads further.

One of the first questions we’re usually asked after treatment is "when can we decorate?"

We completely understand wanting to get your home back to normal as quickly as possible, but giving the treated area time to dry properly is really important.

We recommend waiting around 4–6 weeks before painting (using a non- vinyl moisture permeable emulsion paint) and around 12 months before wallpapering.

Decorating too soon can trap moisture and affect the final finish, so holding off for a wee while now makes a big difference long-term.

We were phoned to have a look at a ground floor flat in Glasgow to investigate rising damp in a bathroom and the adjoining lounge.

The issue was running along the same internal wall, but part of it was hidden behind tiles in the bathroom, which had to be carefully removed to access the full extent of the problem.

Once opened up, we removed the contaminated plaster to expose the underlying masonry before installing a new damp proof course and treating the masonry with a salt neutralising solution before replastering both areas.

Everything is now in place and drying out properly before the final finish.

Do you always need a new damp proof course?

No and it’s not always the right solution.

Damp can be caused by a number of things, from external defects to ventilation issues, so it’s important to understand the cause first.

In some cases, a new DPC is needed but in other cases the issue might lie elsewhere. This is why proper investigation comes first when we look at jobs. We start with a survey where we will visit your property, find the root cause of the problem and advise what (if any) remedial work might need done.

If damp or timber issues have been on your list for a while, summer is the ideal time to get them sorted.

Warmer weather helps everything dry out properly, and it’s often easier to get work completed with less disruption.

We're starting to see diaries fill up over the next few months, so if it’s something you’ve been meaning to get sorted, now’s a good time to get it booked in. VIsit our website to get in touch: https://www.mathesondampservices.co.uk/contact-us/
