Hello! I’m Heather, founder of The Canvas Community.

With a background in Fine Art and over seven years’ experience in care, much of my work has been supporting older adults and people living with dementia. Through this, I’ve seen how creative sessions can boost confidence, spark conversation, and simply brighten someone’s day.

I created The Canvas Community to bring creativity and companionship into more lives. I offer gentle, one-to-one art sessions that are calm, practical, and completely pressure-free, no experience required!

While I specialise in dementia-friendly sessions, everyone is welcome to enjoy a supportive space to explore their creativity.

Feel free to send me a message or send me an email - [email protected]

🌟 Creative 1:1 Home Visits for Older Adults & People Living with Dementia 🎨💛
(South Lakes area)

Hello everyone! I’m Heather - a carer and artist based in the South Lakes. I have experience in domiciliary care and a background in Fine Art, and I’m currently offering 1:1 creative home visits for older adults and people living with dementia.

These sessions are gentle, relaxed, and completely tailored to the individual. Together, we create meaningful artwork that helps:
✨ spark memories
✨ ease loneliness
✨ encourage self-expression
✨ bring joy through colour and creativity

My long-term aim is to help people tell their stories through art and, with permission, share selected pieces in community exhibitions to help connect generations and celebrate the voices of older adults.

Alongside the art sessions, I can also offer light support at home while I’m there (e.g., companionship, tidying, preparing refreshments).

If you or a loved one might benefit from this, or if you’d like to chat about what a 1:1 creative visit could look like, please feel free to message me.
I’d love to help bring a little creativity and connection into someone’s week. 💛

🎨 Reconnecting with Creativity 💛

This wonderful participant is living with dementia and was once an artist who painted beautiful scenes. For years, he believed he could no longer paint, but recently, art has become a meaningful way for him to reconnect with his creative past and take his mind of current problems acting as a theraputic thing for him.

Despite challenges with communication and hand mobility, he now expresses himself through bold, vibrant colours, often using his fingers to paint and blend. Watching him rediscover the joy of creating has been truly special.

🍂 Creative Expression Through Rag Wreath Making 🍁

Our recent rag wreath–making session brought a wonderful group of women together in a warm, relaxed space filled with creativity, conversation, and plenty of autumn vibes.

It was a gentle, hands-on activity that encouraged sharing stories while crafting beautiful wreaths to hang on their doors. Everyone enjoyed the process, and each wreath turned out completely unique, a lovely reflection of each person’s individual creativity. 🍂💛

🎃 Creating Halloween Decorations at Birthwaite Residence! 👻

We recently held a fun and relaxed craft session at Birthwaite Residence in Windermere, where residents turned recycled materials into brilliant Halloween decorations for their upcoming party!

With music playing, plenty of conversation, and endless cups of tea, the session was a lovely opportunity for residents to get creative, socialise, and enjoy the spooky season together. 🧡

We loved seeing everyone’s ideas come to life!

Meet Heather - Founder of The Canvas Community 🎨

The Canvas Community was created by Heather Garfin, an artist with a background in the care sector. With a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, Heather saw first-hand while working in care that older adults and people living with dementia were often missing out on meaningful, engaging art experiences. She wanted to change that, so The Canvas Community was born.

Heather knows the therapeutic power of art personally, and she’s passionate about sharing that joy, expression, and connection with others in care homes, community settings, and through gentle 1:1 sessions.

Heather’s passion for connecting people through art extends far beyond care settings. During the pandemic, she and two friends hid tiny pieces of artwork around Manchester for people to find, share online, and connect through. The project spread across the UK and eventually evolved into City Found It - a Manchester exhibition celebrating the artwork, the stories, and all the wonderful connections formed along the way.

These experiences showed Heather just how magical art can be in bringing people together. That’s why she created The Canvas Community, with the dream of growing more community projects and showcasing participants’ artwork through exhibitions and online platforms, celebrating their creativity and sharing their stories with the wider world.
