We’ll be at Dunlop Gala tomorrow with lots of edible perennial and food forest/permaculture plants. Here’s 3 of my favourites:

- COMFREY soil-boosting superplant—its deep roots mine nutrients, making it perfect for composting or brewing into a rich, organic liquid feed
- GOOD KING HENRY an old-fashioned supergreen! Its spinach-like leaves are great cooked, the shoots can be eaten like asparagus
- HYSSOP fragrant herb that attracts pollinators, repels pests, and can be added to herbal teas and natural remedies

Arriving back inspired and taste-tantalised by our weekend forest gardening course in Devon with Martin Crawford.

Seeing forest gardens in various stages of establishment: 4 years, 9 years and 31 years gave me a sense of how the system evolves over time and what to focus on at each stage. Was interesting to see the experimental technique of using ā€˜nurse trees’ - broom, birch, alder - planted at the same time as the fruit trees to help with wind protection and starting to shade out the grasses.

Lots of ideas for the next stage of our forest garden here. One thing for sure is that we’ll be trialing pineapple guava in the polytunnel (the flowers taste like fruity heaven) and adding in lots of trees with edible leaves, my favourites being toon, small-leaved lime and prickly ash.

If you’re based in Scotland check out Skills Hub Scotland, I managed to get funding for the course this way.

Lack of photos due to being generally enthralled, but here’s one of Martin Crawford and Frankie with the pineapple guava. Triple yums.
