3 Easy Ways to Support Dahlias in Containers 🌸

Growing dahlias in pots is a brilliant way to add colour to a patio, but those tall, beautiful stems can be fragile! Our horticultural expert, Alison, is here to show you how to support your dahlias so they stay upright and protected from wind damage all season long.

Alison’s 3 Simple Methods:
1️⃣ Metal Plant Supports: Perfect for small to mid-height varieties (like the lovely 'Dahlia Sunshine') —simple, quick, and sturdy.
2️⃣ The Twine Web: Use bamboo canes or garden sticks pushed around the pot’s edge, then weave twine across to create a supportive web.
3️⃣ Single Staking: Best for lighter varieties like 'Dahlia Honka'. Just remember to place your stake at the time of planting to protect the tubers!

💡 Expert Tip: Always install your supports at the time of planting. Your goal is for the foliage to eventually grow and hide the support system entirely.

👇 Are you growing dahlias in containers this year? Let us know which varieties you’ve chosen in the comments, and be sure to 'Share' this post with a fellow gardener who might need these tips!

Inviting wildlife into your garden 🌿

Wildlife is essential for your garden to thrive. If you're unsure how to welcome more pollinators and birds into your outdoor space, follow these simple steps from Nicola (Breagha Garden Design) :

🌸 Choose open blooms: Select a variety of pollinator-friendly plants with simple, open-blooming flowers so insects can easily reach the pollen.
🪻Stagger flowering times: Plant a mix that blooms at different times to ensure a year-round food source from early spring through autumn.
💧 Add a water source: A simple birdbath or shallow dish ensures your garden wildlife stays hydrated.
🏡 Create natural shelter: Plant dense shrubs to provide safe nesting spaces and shelter for birds and small mammals.
🌿 Leave a spot 'untidy': Let a section of your garden go a bit wild. Leaving long grass, fallen leaves, or a small log pile untouched creates a perfect sanctuary for hedgehogs and beneficial insects.

Remember, your garden is a shared space! What’s your best piece of advice for welcoming wildlife into your garden? Let us know below! 👇

We've gathered a selection of our pollinator plants below so you can start building your wildlife sanctuary today: https://www.gardenersdream.co.uk/collections/pollinator-plants?_pos=1&_psq=pollinator&_ss=e&_v=1.0
