The other day I received a message from a 'lady', calling themselves Brenda Carlos. She said that she had seen my painting of Whitby here on FB, very much liked it, and wished to buy it, and rather than go through FB, she wanted to message me directly. She claimed she lived in the USA, Ohio, and would be willing to pay the postage costs. She wanted to pay via PayPal, thats good cos PayPal have protections in place! She gave me her address and PayPal Acc email. However, I get an email, claiming to be from PayPal saying that the payment is on hold and she must pay an extra £200 in order to 'upgrade' my account in order to receive larger sums. I must then refund the extra £200 to receive my money. However, when i check my PayPal acc there is no money in my to refund!
Obviously I have spoken to PayPal and they have confirmed this is a scam and to block the person.
It is very easy to get swept up in the excitement of someone wishing to buy your art, particularly if you are a fresh artist finding your feet.
Please be careful and mindful people, there are some very unscrupulous people out there who will take advantage of our kind and generous nature.
