What a job. 💪🌲🏉

After two weeks of hard work, one of the biggest projects Bark and Branch has ever undertaken is now complete at Salcombe Rugby Club.

18 large Macrocarpa trees have been carefully climbed and reduced due to increasing safety concerns for both the rugby pitch and the neighbouring properties. Every piece of timber was handled with care, and rather than removing the trees entirely, the remaining stems have been retained as valuable habitat poles that will provide homes for birds, bats, insects and other wildlife for many years to come.

This project has pushed us to our limits at times. Long days, plenty of challenges, and a huge amount of teamwork from everyone involved. I couldn’t be prouder of the lads for the effort, professionalism and determination they have shown throughout.

The weather certainly hasn’t made things easy either. We’ve battled through high winds, heavy rain and some challenging conditions to get the project completed safely and professionally.

On a personal level, this one means a lot. 🦀

Thank you to Salcombe Rugby Club for putting their trust in us, and thank you to everyone who has supported Bark and Branch on our journey.

Although the main works are now complete, you may still see us around the club over the next few days carrying out final tidy-up works, removing remaining material and making sure everything is left neat and tidy.

Here’s to the next challenge. 🌳

A massive thank you to Nicholas Rowell Haulage, Rt Farm & Industrial Buildings Limited and TP Tree Works we couldn’t have done it without you all.

This week we started one of our biggest jobs to date for Salcombe Rugby Club, removing 18 large Monterey Cypress (Macrocarpa) trees due to increasing safety concerns for both the rugby pitch and the neighbouring properties opposite the club.

Rather than removing them entirely, every tree is being carefully climbed and reduced to approximately 10 metres in height, allowing the remaining stems to become valuable habitat poles for birds, bats, insects and other wildlife for many years to come.

What makes this job even more special for me is that 16–17 years ago I proudly pulled on the Salcombe Rugby Club shirt and loved every minute of playing there. To now return as the owner of Bark and Branch Tree and Garden Services, carrying out one of the club’s largest tree management projects, is something I’m incredibly proud of.

It’s a reminder that with hard work, determination and a bit of belief in yourself, dreams really can come true.

A rare Saturday job we carried out for a commercial client, we removed 2 large dead trees, 2 large sycamores over a sub station, many small sycamore saplings and a 5 meter crown raise over a large parking area. All in all a job well done and some very happy clients.

This week’s newest apprentice 🌳💪

Took my little girl out quoting and surveying with me this week… safe to say she’s already better at spotting things than I am 👀😂

While I was checking structure and defects, she was busy inspecting the important stuff… including discovering some “gernadooma” growing on a tree 🍄 (Ganoderma applanatum) for anyone interested, this bracket fungus is a wood decaying fungus that causes fatal and incurable diseased called either white rot, or but rot. This cheeky stuff will slowly hollow the tree from the inside out.

Reminds you why we do it though, not just the work, but getting out in nature, slowing things down, and seeing it all through fresh eyes 🌿

Give it a few years and she’ll be pricing jobs and running the crew 😅

It’s nesting season 🌿🐦
Means a lot of tree work has to be approached carefully this time of year, and in some cases, left completely alone.
We always check properly before starting anything, because protecting wildlife matters just as much as the job itself.
That said, there’s still plenty we can help with:
✔️ Hedge trimming
✔️ Garden tidy ups
✔️ Maintenance work
✔️ Problem trees (where safe to do so)
Got a few spaces coming up over the next couple of weeks if anyone needs anything sorted 💚🍂

Some jobs mean more than others 🤍
This tree stood in a local pet cemetery for years… part of a place filled with love, memories, and the tiniest (but biggest) members of people’s families 🐾 When it sadly had to come down, it didn’t feel right for it to just disappear.
So instead… part of it was turned into something that can stay 🤍
A bench. A place to sit. To remember. To feel close again.
There’s something really special about giving something a second life like this, especially somewhere that means so much to people.
Not just cutting trees down… but creating something from them 🌿
Proper proud of this one ❤️

We’ve been a bit quiet on socials lately… turns out being busy is a good problem to have. 🤩🌳

Massive thank you to everyone who’s kept us going with recommendations and support, it genuinely means everything.

If your local, and need any tree or garden work doing, we’ve got some availability coming up! 💚

Anyway… here is a cool video for your viewing pleasure! 🔥

Hi all! 🌳

With a few new faces following the page, I thought it was time to (re)introduce myself, especially as my original post seems to have gone walkabouts… typical 😅

First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who’s shared posts, sent messages, and shown support. It genuinely means a lot and helps keep a local, independent business growing.

I’m Toby, owner of Bark and Branch Tree & Garden Services.
I’m a fully qualified tree surgeon with 11 years’ experience, alongside 13 years in gardening, and over the last couple of years I’ve also qualified as a tree surveyor.

In 2023, following the birth of my child, I decided to take the leap and start my own business — putting my experience, passion, and work ethic into something I could truly build and be proud of. Thanks to the amazing local community, the business has gone from strength to strength and kept us busy ever since.

These days I’m usually joined by Tom and Niall, and sometimes the lovely Hannah from H Stone Garden Care, making sure every job is carried out safely, professionally, and with attention to detail. I’m incredibly fortunate to have such a wonderful and dedicated team by my side with the same ethics of attention to detail.

We offer a full range of services including:

🌳 All aspects of tree surgery – reductions, removals, crown lifting & thinning, formative pruning, dismantling, and sectional felling
🌬️ Storm damage & emergency call-outs
📋 Tree surveys & tree reports – including risk assessments, condition surveys, and advice for homeowners, landlords, and commercial sites
✂️ Hedge cutting & management – from regular maintenance to large reductions
🌿 Garden maintenance & clearance
🪜 Work at height & difficult access jobs
🪵 Stump management & site tidy-ups

We’re fully insured, safety-focused, and take real pride in doing things properly — whether it’s a small domestic job or a more technical piece of work.

Here’s a few photos from yesterday’s Ingrid antics. Ingrid vs Bark & Branch.
Bark & Branch wins. 🌳💪
Joined by H Stone Garden Care and Niall.

Thanks again for the continued support and for backing local — it honestly makes a difference 💚
