Some Bright Spark Rob Causon. Painting & decorating (and the odd bit of handyman-ing) in and around the Cliff Villages, Lincolnshire.

I posted this on Instagram but posted it across to my personal profile again for some reason, and it had a voice over on Instagram that I can't be arsed to do again on here, so you'll have to make do with the video as is. Jen's room, done just before we went away last week.

I quite enjoyed doing these - just a nice easy job done over the course of last week, taking these horrible old doors from old brown to bright white. After a bit of a tickle with the sander I applied a primer and two top coats using the Aqua Guard system, with satin for the top coats.

Quick pad down with 320 in between coats, and I like to use the Ice Fusion minis for the first couple of coats and then Pure Flow Ultra for the final coat.

The laminate on the doors is a little bit wavy, which you can feel - and see in the video - but you can't really see it in real life. Just looks like a really smooth, flat finish. Either way, it wasn't in the brief and I'm not sure I could do much about it if it was. The laminate is too thin to sand it out, and it'd probably be cheaper to replace them than to start faffing about trying to level them with filler.

I'll likely be decorating the hallway later in the year. Hope so anyway, so I can do something about that loft hatch 🪓

Quite a lot of sanding and filling actually. And yeah, then a bit of painting, bit of wallpapering, bit more painting.

Anyway, off on the school run. See you later.

(It's 9.30pm, but this is another one I accidentally shared to my own profile instead of this account.)

The customer put this beading in and wanted it papering in between. Fine. Prime it, bit of sanding, caulk, top coat it, paper between it, job done.

Or... prime it, bit of sanding, caulk, forget about top coating it and paper between it anyway, then have to go back and top coat it later. Job still done, but there's nowt like making life harder for yourself.

It wasn't exactly the same price but I couldn't be arsed to re-record it. Anyway, I don't know if it's just me but I think doorframes are monsters. Maybe even worse than spindles. So much sanding and scraping, angles and thin flat sections to sand. And these ones look like they'd been painted by someone dunking their hair in the paint and flicking it about the place. (These aren't the ones I was quoting for a couple of weeks ago btw, those are booked in for the end of September I think.)

I accidentally posted this and a few other reels on my personal account so reposting on here for posterity.

So, several weeks of work and it comes down to whether I can take good enough pictures to show off what I've done. And the owners are back tomorrow, and will they walk in and nod to themselves while they look around? Perhaps a little smile, and a little stroke of the nearest architrave?

What if they don't?

Finishing a job is always a bit of a double edged sword for me. I've pored over it, top to bottom and side to side so many times that I think I've filled every hole, smoothed every bump... But what if I've been blinded by that repetition? What if I've missed a scratch, or forgotten to check an angle? And white is particularly difficult I think, because the lines still need to be straight and the corners crisp, but they're harder to see. And if there's no colour to invoke a feeling then the eye will be drawn to the surfaces themselves; to the finish.

At some point you have to just accept the job as done and walk away. I think it's some of my best work. I hope it is.

Onto the next.

TOP CLEANING TIP: To give the edges of your carpet a really good deep clean, get a decorator in to paint your skirting boards. Their tape will really lift all the dust and loose bits of carpet.

I absolutely don't understand the videos of people rolling a whole wall with one load of the sleeve. It must be patchy as hell, surely?

So here's a video of me rolling a whole wall with many loads of the sleeve, back-rolling all the way along, keeping a close eye on it to make sure there's no errant bits of fluff or dust or hair or whatever else. Perfect walls take time and care.

It takes about the same amount of time to roll a ceiling out as it does two kids to make some banana muffins... in case you were wondering, like.

Bit warm though. I don't recommend decorating with the oven on.
