Three stages in the design process for a recent project in Barrow upon Soar - sketch plan, CAD presentation plan, model and 3D views.
As usual with new build properties, the garden is a blank canvas. The client was keen to re-use the existing paving and for us to create an informal, modern, low maintenance garden that captured the feeling of some of their favourite Mediterranean gardens; a space in which to relax, with architectural plant forms - where a mix of foliage texture is more important than flower, and places for sculptures, pots and boulders as focal points.

The familiar issues of city living: back to back gardens, buildings adjoining and overlooking, limited space, low light levels, poor access etc. (Luckily for us, that last one didn't apply on this job - but it usually does).
Our clients knew exactly what they wanted for this design - the garden had to be an extension of the house; the outdoor room. A permanent seating area for entertaining, clean lines, improved privacy, a contemporary feel with crisp paving, and low maintenance (predominantly) evergreen planting whilst retaining the large, mature trees and Fan Palm. Oh, and it needed to be dog friendly.

Hopefully we've delivered.

It's always wonderful to see the development of a garden we have designed and built.
Completed in 2022, our clients recently sent us these fantastic photos to show how the garden has progressed since we left - and we love what they've done with it.

I know, we're going on about level changes again. Completed towards the end of this summer, here's another example of why changes in level within a garden can be a very good thing. The design needed to allow for a more gentle access from the main paved area up to the lawn level, with the client also being keen to avoid having handrails if possible. Keeping the steps fairly broad and generous helps to reduce the visual impact of the difference in ground levels and, therefore, a less daunting prospect. Planting beds created at various heights on either side of the steps also help to soften the appearance.
The upper seating area and pergola give the garden a destination point. Not only does it provide a reason for the 'journey' through the garden, but it also creates the illusion of more space and provides another place from which to view the garden.

A few photos (and CAD 3D images) of this recently completed build in Melton Mowbray. As with many garden spaces that come with newly built houses, it had some particular challenges to consider; in this case, it was it's size, shape and dramatic level changes - 60cm over just 5m! The original concept plan shows all the fun angles and difficult corners that are typical. But just because a garden is smaller, it doesn't necessarily need to do any less than a larger one, and therefore needs to work that much harder if the design is to be successful. Washing lines, garden storage, tool sheds can all need to be squeezed in alongside seating areas, garden features, and, of course, planting.
The main seating terrace here was created by digging into the slope and surrounding it with raised beds to create the sense of enclosure, which is enhanced by the simple pergola structure. Timber screening hides away the areas that we don't want to be looking at whilst also providing a backdrop and support for planting. Staggering the path creates greater interest both physically and visually, and, once the planting matures, helps to create a greater sense of space by leading the eye, restricting and revealing views as you journey through the garden or when viewed from the house.

This time of year is particularly ideal for settling trees & shrubs into their new homes as the soil is still relatively warm after the summer, allowing roots to gently settle before the onset of the winter months.
