On a beautiful and cold crisp winters morning, only the hardest trees survive.

All four of these UK native trees are hardy and well-adapted to the UK’s winter climate. Here’s a breakdown of their cold tolerance:

1. UK Oak (Quercus robur & Quercus petraea)
• Hardiness: Very hardy (down to -20°C or lower)

2. UK Beech (Fagus sylvatica)
• Hardiness: Hardy (down to around -15°C to -20°C)

3. UK Field Maple (Acer campestre)
• Hardiness: Very hardy (down to -25°C or lower)

4. UK Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus)
• Hardiness: Very hardy (down to -25°C or lower)

How to Plant a Tree the Right Way! 🌱🌳

Planting a tree is more than just digging a hole and dropping it in. A little extra care goes a long way in ensuring it thrives for years to come. Here’s how to do it right:

1️⃣ Choose the Right Tree – Consider your climate, soil type, and available space before selecting a species.
2️⃣ Dig the Proper Hole – Make it twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than its current soil level.
3️⃣ Loosen the Roots – If the roots are circling, gently tease them apart to encourage outward growth.
4️⃣ Backfill with Native Soil – Avoid over-amending; trees establish best in the soil they’ll grow in.
5️⃣ Water Deeply – Give it a good soak right after planting to eliminate air pockets.
6️⃣ Mulch Wisely – Apply a 2-4 inch layer around the base, but keep it away from the trunk.
7️⃣ Stake if Necessary – Only stake if the tree is top-heavy or in a windy location. Remove after a year.
8️⃣ Ongoing Care – Water regularly during the first few years and monitor for pests or disease.
