What a delightful moment! I was honoured to introduce our to HRH Princess Royal during her recent visit of Saughton park. It was a wonderful day of celebration! 200 years and new glasshouse! So much achieved by the lovely people who make The Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society - The Caley what it is 🫶🌱

We were delighted to celebrate 200 years with a Royal Charter and officially open our new teaching glasshouse last week with a visit from our Patron HRH The Princess Royal. Our staff, volunteers, partner organisations, council and several former presidents joined our President Lewis Normand and Hon. Vice President Pam Whittle to host HRH and the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, showcasing our work at our home in Saughton Park, Edinburgh on Friday

Hello again! The last few months I've been silent here while working nonstop on the most wonderful project ever..

Living in present, gardening my mind and making plans for future with my wee sidekick always by my side🌱

Today is a family day, frosty out there and so we get out into the woods to see the winter magic together.

Looking forward to what comes next 🌱

Creating garden is a journey and never ending love affair🌱

So while busy working in & on other people's gardens 🌱 we've been practicing permaculture in ours🌱

We have been slowly turning a neglected scruffy weedy gravely patch into a garden we enjoy 🌱 And as we decided to take it slowly, observe the space, experiment and allow new ideas and solutions to come to us, we started with planting.. which is often done last.

The space is limited and so the plants are growing in layers, protecting the soil and each other from elements and pests while keeping it moist.

We're looking forward to planting trees this autumn.. and training new espailer apple trees in the front garden where the support is used by pea plants meanwhile.

There's still so much to be done, hardscaping improvements including new steps path and retaining wall upgrade, glasshouse waiting to be assembled, pond dug up, bin store with greenroof and compost bay built, water storage and irrigation installed.. and likely much more🌱

“Yesterday I witnessed something that took my breath away. I heard a sound at the window of the cottage. When I looked, a cedar waxwing had hit the window and fallen to the deck. It’s mate stood beside it. It was clear that the fallen bird was dead. I turned away for a moment and when I looked again, it’s mate had hopped over. It lay down beside its partner, their heads touching. It closed its eyes and passed over to Spirit with its mate. The sadness and beauty of the moment was such a privilege to witness. If anyone has ever doubted that animals feel emotion and love, this moment was absolute proof of both. Nature truly has much to teach us.”

Two weeks since the complete revamp.. it will take time before the plants bulk up and the trees create the desired canopy but there are already signs of colour and joy🌷

We love the feedback we recereceivex from one of the staff who said

"It looks great.  Love the trees to add interest and it looks terrific looking down on it from the first floor"

For comparison, the second picture was taken during my very first visit of the site... what a difference!

Whip them tiles like the Dutch...

"Younger generations have less knowledge, gardens are getting smaller and so there are more hard surfaces needed for your patio or your path. Dutch people also like to have everything tidy, but we need to accept the weeds. Every paving stone gone is a win for the ground and for biodiversity.”
