Flat-Pack or Fully Erected? Here's What You Need to Know

Choosing between a flat-pack and an erected garden building is one of the first decisions you'll face, and it has a bigger impact on your experience than most people expect. Flat-pack buildings are typically cheaper upfront and give you full control over the assembly process, but they demand a solid level of DIY confidence. If the base isn't perfectly level or the structure isn't assembled correctly, you risk timber warping, poor drainage, and gaps that let moisture in. An erected building, on the other hand, is built and installed by experienced hands, meaning every joint, window seal, and roof felt is fitted to a professional standard from day one. Sealing windows inside and out immediately after installation and treating the timber with a quality water-resistant oil-based treatment are two steps that make a significant difference to the long-term condition of any garden building, regardless of which route you choose.

At Sheds N Chalets, we've been manufacturing and erecting timber garden buildings from our base in Llanelli for over 33 years, and we build everything in-house so there's no middleman adding to your costs. 🏡 Whether you're weighing up a traditional apex shed or a full Georgian chalet, the right choice depends on your budget, your site, and how much you want on your plate after delivery. Which would you go for, flat-pack or fully erected? And have you ever tackled a garden building yourself? Let us know in the comments below.

Make Your Garden Shed Work for You All Year Round 🌿

Most people pack up their shed come autumn and write it off until spring. But with the right insulation and weatherproofing in place, your garden building can be a fully functional space in every season, whether that's a home office, workshop, or hobby room.

Start with the timber itself. Treat your building with a good quality, water-resistant oil-based treatment as soon as it's installed (three coats on new timber is the standard recommendation), then repeat this process every year without fail. Untreated timber will absorb moisture and damp patches will appear inside the building, so this step is non-negotiable. Beyond that, check that nothing is in contact with the exterior of your shed, including overhanging branches or hedgerow growth, as physical contact with the roof felt is one of the most common causes of water ingress. For the interior, rigid foam board insulation fixed between the frame panels, combined with draught-proofing around the door and any window frames, will make a noticeable difference to how the space retains heat during colder months. Have you already insulated your garden building, or is it something you've been putting off? Drop a comment below and let us know what you use your shed for. 🔨

Why Councils and Housing Associations Trust Timber Sheds

When organisations like Carmarthenshire County Council and Gwalia Housing Group need to equip hundreds of new homes with garden storage, they don't leave it to chance. They come to Sheds N Chalets. That says a great deal about the standard of build and reliability that large-scale developers demand, and it's a standard we've maintained for over 33 years from our base here in Llanelli.

The reason housing associations and construction firms choose a direct manufacturer is straightforward: no middleman, no inflated costs, and no compromise on quality. Clients including Bro Myrddin Housing Association, Persimmon Homes, Tycroes Group, and Morganstone Construction Ltd all trust us to supply timber sheds across their new developments, knowing every structure is custom-built in-house to a consistent specification. If it's good enough for a county council to fit across an entire housing stock, it's good enough for your garden. Are you currently weighing up options for a garden building, or have you recently had one installed? Let us know in the comments. 👇

How to Choose the Right Size Shed for Your Garden 🌿

Getting the size wrong is one of the most common (and costly) mistakes people make when buying a shed. Too small and you're cramming tools in with no room to move. Too large and you've eaten up valuable garden space you didn't need to lose.

Start by thinking honestly about what the shed will actually be used for. Basic tool and lawnmower storage? A compact option like the Traditional Apex Shed or the Reverse Tool Shed will serve most gardens well. If you're planning a proper workspace for hobbies or DIY projects, you'll want something more substantial, such as a Workshop (Pent or Apex Roof) with enough floor space to move around freely. And if gardening is your passion, a dedicated Potting Shed gives you the room and layout to work properly without compromise. A good rule of thumb: measure the items you plan to store first, then add at least 30% extra to that footprint. You'll fill the space faster than you think. What's the main thing you'd be using your shed for? Drop it in the comments below and we can point you in the right direction. 🏡

As a family-run manufacturer based in Llanelli with over 33 years of experience, Sheds N Chalets builds every structure in-house, which means no middleman and no inflated prices. Every shed is built to last, and our team is on hand to help you choose the right size and style for your specific garden and budget.

Garden Building Planning Permission in Wales: What You Need to Know

Most homeowners in South Wales assume they need planning permission before adding a shed, log cabin, or summerhouse to their garden. In many cases, that simply is not true. Under Permitted Development rights, most standard garden buildings do not require planning permission, provided they meet certain conditions around size, height, and placement relative to your property boundary.

The key rules to keep in mind: the structure must not cover more than 50% of the total garden area, it must not be positioned forward of the principal elevation of your home, and height restrictions apply depending on the roof style (typically no more than 2.5 metres if within 2 metres of a boundary). Buildings intended for residential use, or those on designated land such as a National Park, may be subject to stricter rules. If your property is listed or sits within a conservation area, it is always worth checking with your local planning authority before going ahead. Have you ever looked into whether your garden building project needed permission, or did you just go ahead and build?

With over 33 years of experience manufacturing timber buildings across Wales, the team at Sheds N Chalets has helped countless customers understand exactly what is and is not possible on their land. Whether you are considering a workshop, log cabin, or bespoke chalet, getting the facts right from the start saves time and avoids costly mistakes. What kind of garden building are you thinking about adding this summer? 🏡

What to Look for When Commissioning a Bespoke Timber Building

Getting a bespoke timber building right from the start saves you time, money, and a great deal of frustration later. The timber quality is the foundation of everything. At Sheds N Chalets, every build uses Swedish kiln-dried redwood, scanned and graded for quality, sourced from sustainably managed forests. If a supplier cannot tell you exactly where their timber comes from or how it has been treated, that is a warning sign worth taking seriously.

Beyond the materials, the details of construction and aftercare are what separate a lasting build from a costly mistake. A firm, level base is non-negotiable as any movement or unevenness will compromise the structure over time. All windows must be sealed inside and out shortly after assembly to prevent water ingress, and any overhanging trees or hedges near the building should be cut back regularly. Timber is a natural product and will require ongoing treatment with a quality water-repellent finish to keep damp at bay. With over 33 years of manufacturing experience, the team at Sheds N Chalets builds every structure to your exact specification in their Llanelli workshop, managing the entire process in-house so nothing gets lost between manufacturer and customer. 🏡 What feature matters most to you in a bespoke timber building? Is Your Timber Shed Ready for the Weather?

Most people treat their shed once and forget about it. The problem is, timber is a natural material and it is not waterproof by default. Even a brand-new building from Sheds N Chalets arrives with just one basecoat of water-based treatment, which is designed to protect it during installation only. Most treatments recommend three coats on new timber, so applying a good-quality oil-based or solvent-based wood preservative shortly after installation is essential. After that, the process should be repeated every year without fail. You will also want to seal all windows inside and out as soon as possible using silicone or a similar watertight solution, and keep any overhanging branches or hedging cut back well clear of the roof felt.

Our cladding is machined from kiln-dried, graded Scandinavian redwood, so the quality of the timber is already there from day one. What protects that investment is consistent aftercare. A well-treated shed on a firm, level base will serve you for many years. What treatment product have you been using on your garden building? Drop your recommendations in the comments below as it is always useful to hear what works well for other homeowners in the area. 🪵

Timber Outlasts Metal and Plastic. Here's Why.

When it comes to outdoor buildings, the material you choose will define how well it performs, how long it lasts, and how much you enjoy using it for years to come. Timber has a natural strength and character that metal and plastic simply cannot replicate. Metal rusts, plastic warps under UV exposure, and neither offers the same structural integrity or insulation properties you get from quality timber. At Sheds N Chalets, every build uses Swedish kiln-dried redwood, individually scanned and graded for quality, cut from sustainably managed forests. That means you get a building that is not only built to last but is also a responsible choice for the environment. 🌲

With over 33 years of manufacturing experience based right here in Llanelli, South West Wales, we have seen first-hand how well-maintained timber buildings stand the test of time. The key is simple upkeep: keeping the structure on a firm, level base, applying a good quality water-repellent treatment, and sealing windows inside and out after assembly. Unlike metal or plastic alternatives, a timber building can be retreated, repaired, and personalised as your needs change. So, would you choose timber over other materials for your garden building? And what would you most like to use the extra space for?
