π TRANSPONDER DEEP DIVE: NXP, TI, ST, Atmel & Mercedes Keys
(Save this β itβll save you time, money, and headaches on the job)
The chip and the ID are NOT the same thing.
Think of it like this:
π The ID = the language the immobiliser speaks
π The chip = the hardware speaking that language
Get either one wrongβ¦ and the job fails β even if your tool says βprogramming successful.β
β οΈ Why this matters
Your tool reports the ID
Your supplier sells you the chip
If they donβt match exactly, youβre wasting time chasing faults that arenβt there.
π Manufacturer Breakdown
πΉ NXP (Philips) β Most European vehicles
ID46 β PCF7936
ID47 β PCF794x (remote PCB integrated)
ID48 β Megamos Crypto
ID49 β NCF29A family
π§ PCF794x Generations (This catches people out):
PCF7941 / 7946 β older generation (Hitag2, early remotes)
PCF7947 / 7948 β newer VAG/Renault applications
PCF7952 / 7953 β newer encrypted systems, often not backwards compatible
β οΈ They may share the same ID47, but the hardware is different
π Wrong generation = remote or immobiliser issues
β οΈ ID49 warning:
NCF29A comes in A / A1 / A3 revisions
They look identical when ordering
β‘οΈ Use the wrong one on newer VAG MQB = no start, no explanation
β
Best practice: default to A1 or A3
πΉ Texas Instruments (TI)
ID4C, ID4D, ID63
ID8A β DST AES (Toyota, Lexus, some Hyundai/Kia)
β οΈ Common mistake:
ID8A and ID49 show up on similar vehicles
π They are completely unrelated
π« NXP β TI β donβt mix them up
πΉ Atmel (ATA5577)
Found in super chips / universal keys
β
Great for older protocols
π« Does NOT cover: ID48, ID49, ID8A, Mercedes
π Know its limits before relying on it
πΉ STMicroelectronics
Found in modules, not keys
HC05 / HC08 (Mercedes EIS)
π MCU type determines your programming method
πΉ Mercedes Keys (Know the difference!)
This isnβt one system β itβs FOUR:
Motorola EIS
NEC (IR, password-based)
BGA / FBS3
FBS4 β Dealer only
β οΈ FBS3 & FBS4 overlap in year and key style
π Always verify via VIN + SA code (803/804)
π§ Final Tip
Start with:
βοΈ Make
βοΈ Model
βοΈ Year
βοΈ ID type
Then go deeper into the chip when things donβt add up β thatβs what gets the job over the line.
π¬ Been caught out by PCF794x generations or NCF29A revisions? Or the FBS3/FBS4 overlap?
