Tucked into the surrounding gardens, this recently completed extension to a detached house in Walthamstow Village creates a quiet dialogue between architecture and landscape.

Clad in larch and surrounded by soft planting, the space now feels like a natural extension of the garden itself.

Do you think architecture should blend into the garden, or stand apart from it?

Introducing Arkley Road, our recently completed deep retrofit project in Walthamstow. Exposing the original ceiling joists and the raw plaster walls bring warmth and texture, celebrating the building’s character. A cosy layer of wood fibre insulation and new triple glazed windows ensure warmth and energy efficiency. Subtle, atmospheric interventions that set the tone for a home designed to be both enduring and inviting.
What’s the detail that makes your home feel special?

By night, the Arkley Road glows. Behind the calm exterior lies a deep retrofit: wood fibre insulation, increased airtightness, and triple-glazed windows ensure warmth and energy efficiency. Light spills outward, revealing a ground floor that now feels open, welcoming, and deeply connected to daily life. A quiet transformation that shows how existing homes can be reimagined without expanding.
Who would you invite to share an evening here?

A clear line of sight through the opened up hallway at Arkley Road carries the eye through the house and into the garden beyond. The reconfiguration blurs boundaries between indoors and outdoors, creating a space that feels brighter, more expansive, and more connected. Internal wood fibre insulation and new glazing in previously bricked up openings make this flow not only beautiful but also thermally efficient, reducing bills and protecting from the elements. Connection to nature made practical, durable, and atmospheric.
Do you dream of blurring the boundary between indoors and outdoors, or keeping them distinct?

Sometimes the smartest design decisions are the simplest. The retrofit of Arkley Road rethinks the existing footprint, layering in extra storage, circulation and amenity without adding more square metres, all while enhancing comfort with cosy wood fibre insulation and improved airtightness. No need for more space when you can make space work smarter.
Sometimes the smartest design decisions are the simplest. Could clever reconfiguration improve your home’s comfort?

The transformation of Arkley Road continues outside. British Larch cladding wraps the existing side return, softening its appearance with a Shou Sugi Ban charred finish. Together with wood fibre insulation and triple-glazed windows, it keeps the house cosy in winter and cool in summer.
Would you choose timber cladding for your own home?

Working closely with structural engineers , St. George Villa has been a testbed for low embodied carbon construction methods and materials. The project used minimal concrete, avoided structural steel entirely, and prioritised natural, low-embodied carbon materials throughout. The structure of the extension is constructed entirely of timber and insulated with a toasty layer of wood fibre insulation.

We're excited to begin sharing the first completed external image of St. George Villa, a basement extension and deep retrofit of a Victorian villa in Walthamstow Village, that prioritises low embodied carbon construction alongside the restoration of the building's historic fabric.

Working closely with , this project has been a testbed for low embodied carbon construction methods and materials... more on that in our next post.
