Assemble and Local Works Studio have designed a small public park in South Bermondsey for Southwark Council.

Construction is now well under way for the first half of Bramcote Park. The design incorporates reuse of existing materials from in and around the park, repairing, refurbishing and repurposing them into new forms.

Old metal goals, swing frames, swing barriers, and covered benches are being transformed into exciting new pieces of play infrastructure, cycle stands and entrance ways. Earth is being mounded into hills to roll down and swales to jump across. A bridge structure - echoing forms unearthed by archaeologists in nearby Bramcote Grove - will appear on the site for the first time since timber trackways crossed marshes here in the Bronze Age! A welcoming multi-purpose public square is being formed in the heart of the park.

A community in Somerset is buying and rebuilding their own town centre.

Private development driven by short-term profits has become the norm. Too often, affordable homes, workspaces, and community areas are negotiated away, leaving local people empty-handed. Mayday Saxonvale is changing that by working to bring Frome’s central 12-acre brownfield site into permanent community ownership. If successful, it will become the UK’s largest community-led development.

We have developed a vision with Mayday Saxonvale for the Notts Store. In the interim, it would become a facility for making new materials and finding new uses for local waste streams, demolition rubble and locally-sourced raw materials. It will be permanently used as a circular economy hub for local businesses centred around re-use and working with waste. This drawing shows our vision for the site at the heart of a local network of material production.

This is a new model for community-led regeneration at scale, keeping value and decision-making rooted locally.

Back in Autumn, we took out some pieces from the archive for a small display of works from the last 15 years, celebrating the launch of ‘Assemble: Building Collective’, a monograph by Aaron Betsky and Thames & Hudson.
Thanks to fell who let us use their workshop for the display. Fell have been part of the .workspace community for the last two years, producing beautifully crafted solid timber furniture at our site in Bromley-by-Bow. Alongside bespoke works, they have just recently released their own furniture range.

We are excited to be building a free to access indoor playground in the Kanal Centre Pompidou museum for modern and contemporary art in Brussels. The project follows the ethos of child-led play that is supported, prioritised and facilitated by adults. In November this year a new landscape evoking volcanoes and distant planets will emerge within the atria of the museum alongside an abundance of colourful props and loose parts – inviting children to direct their own creativity, collaboration and problem solving.
Alongside, we have put together an hour-long radio programme with Kiosk Radio Brussels that aims to reflect on the diverse and inquisitive nature of child’s play by tracing through moments of release, energy, curiosity and slowness. The show will air during the solstice on Sunday 21st July at 8:00am GMT or 9:00am CET time.

The direction and design of the playground emerged through workshops with the museum neighbourhood’s schools, led by The PlayWorks Studio.
We are fortunate to partner with Bauclub , working with them on the construction and delivery side of the project.

We’re proud to have designed structural supports for our long time collaborator Big Chief Demond Melancon, for his participation in the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia this year with ‘Amistad Takeover’ Black Masking Indian suits. These stands are an iteration from the ones we made for V&A Black Masking Culture in 2019, when we approached the V&A Museum to showcase this incredible artist’s work; who was also our colleague and cofounding teacher at Material Institute in New Orleans since 2018. These solid oak stands have been delivered in collaboration with Villa Filanda Antonini in Treviso, built by Falegnameria Brianese, and with ongoing guidance from Big Chief, Alicia Melancon and David Favret. We have completed the deep retrofit of 10 Victorian villas forming student accommodation for St Anne’s College, Oxford.

The project aims to create a ‘home away from home’ for students at 1-10 Bevington Road and entails a comprehensive overhaul of the buildings situated in the North Oxford Conversation Area.

The reconfiguration of internal layouts provides 10 additional bedrooms - making a total of 82. Key upgrades to the building fabric are coupled with the careful incorporation of modern technology, improving thermal comfort whilst leading to an 80% decrease in operational energy demand and a reduction of the college’s reliance on fossil fuels as part of their estate-wide decarbonisation plan.

At the heart of the project are two key moves: restoring the original logic of the self-contained dwellings, so that they feel like homes and the introduction of new covered entrances to provide access and to connect the houses together. These new single storey buildings create a legible entry sequence from college - which historically would have been the rear of the houses - and are articulated with exposed timber roof structure, oak benches, skirting and glazed screens, and new filigree metalwork which references Victorian garden railings.

Inside the houses, the overarching aim is to create a renewed sense of domesticity, whilst addressing the practical challenges of bringing 160-year-old structures up to modern standards, fit for its population of students and conferencing guests. We have avoided a ‘one-size-fits-all’ strategy, instead working with the unique character and idiosyncrasies of each house.

We have begun work with South East Arts London and Lewisham Arthouse on refurbishing the Old Deptford Library on Lewisham Way, home of the Lewisham Arthouse.

The project to repair and restore this grand building to open up the building to better public use whilst improving the quality of the artist studio spaces is made possible with the National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to National Lottery players.

Deptford Central Library was built in 1913-1914 to designs by Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas. The building was designed to serve as the central library for Deptford with two branch libraries.

Lewisham Arthouse is an artist-led cooperative, established in 1992. Since March 1994 it has occupied the Old Deptford Library, registering it as an Asset of Community Value.

Our collaborators at UP Projects have created a short survey on the project and would love to hear from local residents, creatives, communities and businesses. Link in our bio.

This role is focused on delivering seamless operations, managing the full tenant lifecycle, and ensuring the smooth administration of the business across multiple sites. Alongside hands-on responsibility for tenant relations and workspace operations, the role also supports financial performance and the ongoing development of a positive and well-managed working environment.

There will also be opportunities to contribute to new projects, including the development of additional sites and the evolution of the workspace offer.
