Not my usual brief! In the greenhouse with…. my WIFE as we finally embark on our own garden design at home, a Victorian manor in Lincs. Her eye for detail, colour & creative flair I think will balance brilliantly my bigger ideas. She insisted I treat her like a client & give her a presentation, which helped me get my head around things. So I asked myself & her the key questions I ask my clients & came up with some drawings (inc.) We have started removing things & shaping a few bits already. Some new trees arrive tomorrow… and bulbs next week. The challenge will be to stay inspired, stick to budget & try not to have too many rows! But I hope we can create some garden magic together. Shall keep you posted…

Peacock butterfly & bumblebee enjoying our sedum (appropriately named Autumn Joy) we planted last year in Surrey. A happy sight - particularly as the client asked for plants & flowers that attracted as much wildlife as possible 🦋 🐝 throughout the year. Apart from the existing pine forest & handful of mature trees, the garden away from the house was a blank canvas so we went for a more naturalistic wild design here, planting especially beautiful tree specimens - 200 of them, & 10,000 bulbs. Here, more March to May blooms in their 1st and 2nd years of planting.

A London garden we installed in summer & although wet n’ wintery, its blue grey olive, evergreen shrubs & peep of russet skimmia surrounding Tuscan pots, a pillared pergola & carefully chosen paving (& copper lighting ) give it the mix of grandeur & charm we were aiming for.
Looking forward to seeing the vines climb around the pergola & the honeysuckle & pomegranate flower & fruit this spring! (And a nicely laid lunch & bit of fabric on those chairs will be just the ticket.)

Introducing our spectacularly lovely ‘Korofa pot’, an indoor/outdoor made-to-order moveable shellwork piece Charlie has been perfecting for years. The trompe l’oeil handle is a sculpted relief covered in violet cay cay clams. Use her either as a garden ornament, bringing handsome structure to a wild garden or as a vessel for focal trees or shrubs. She’s perfect company poolside or round an outdoor lunch table, either side of a doorway or in a conservatory or garden room. But for something really ✨magical ✨, she is uniquely beautiful in a sitting room or hallway, filled with a scented plant or artificial (shhh…) flower arrangement. Korofa means cockle in Swahili, a language Charlie is fluent in having grown up in Kenya. And his four years formal training as a sculptor at the Florence academy finally catches up with 16 years garden designing & grotto mastering.
