23,050 retail items marked. 42 arrests. 11 shop closures.

SelectaDNA has supported the Metropolitan Police Service during Phase 3 of Operation Zoridon, a major pan-London crackdown targeting the trade in stolen goods.

Through collaboration between police, retailers, Trading Standards and technology partners, SelectaDNA forensic marking is helping officers identify recovered goods and link them to the stores from which they were stolen.

Three PCCs, one goal: protecting tradespeople from tool theft.

Police and Crime Commissioners are investing in free SelectaDNA tool marking for their local trades:

🔹 Hertfordshire: Hertfordshire Police & Crime Commissioner is distributing 1,000 free kits, enough to protect up to 50,000 tools.
🔹 Sussex: Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner and Travis Perkins co-funded 1,000 kits, protecting up to 50,000 tools, with free marking events in Travis Perkins branches.
🔹 Thames Valley: PCC Matthew Barber has given more than 500 kits to tradespeople since March, as part of its Vehicle Crime Strategy.

Each kit marks up to 50 tools with a unique synthetic DNA code, registered to the owner, so police can identify recovered property and return it.

Tool theft isn’t just a problem for tradespeople.

Following our milestone, here’s a look at how forensic marking is protecting rural communities too.

In 2024, North Yorkshire Police’s Rural Task Force began distributing 8,000 SelectaDNA kits to more than 1,600 farms across the county, starting with repeat victims and hotspot locations.

According to the Rural Task Force:
✅ Farms using SelectaDNA were 96% less likely to be a victim of crime
✅ Quad bike thefts fell by 30%

Other forces have since approached North Yorkshire Police about how they delivered such a large project.

1.7 million tools and items of equipment marked!

Since June 2024, SelectaDNA has marked more than 1.7 million tools and items of equipment as part of the campaign.

The campaign grew out of the rallies in Westminster, led by Shoaib Awan (The Gas Expert). It now brings together police forces and PCC offices, alongside merchants, contractors, utilities and rail companies.

The marking is also helping police get stolen tools back. When the Metropolitan Police Service recovered an estimated £2 million of tools and equipment in Ilford, its largest-ever haul, officers identified items marked with SelectaDNA. They included a specialist Openreach fibre splicer, which was returned to its owner.

This milestone is a collaborative effort, and we’re grateful to every partner who has been part of it.

It's Waste Crime Awareness Week and we're highlighting how the Environment Agency is using SelectaDNA to help tackle illegal dumping.

Waste crime damages communities, harms the environment and undermines legitimate businesses. To help combat it, trained officers from the Agency's Disruption and Prevention Team have been forensically marking waste bales at sites in areas including Kettering and Telford, as part of its Waste Crime Prevention strategy.

If marked waste is illegally dumped, its unique forensic code means it can be traced, so the Agency can follow the movement of the waste and find those responsible.
