Last week we stepped out of the studio for a short architectural walking tour through the City and Spitalfields.

Starting at Liverpool Street, we looked at the changing Broadgate and Bishopsgate context, before heading through Exchange Square, Norton Folgate and Blossom Yard, and into the historic streets of Spitalfields. The walk finished at Fournier Street and Christ Church Spitalfields, before a well-earned drink nearby.

A good reminder of how much there is to learn from a short walk through London, from large-scale commercial redevelopment and public realm to Georgian streets, restored fabric.

West London House.

The interior is organised around a central double-height space, bringing light deep into the plan and allowing a series of interconnected rooms to unfold across levels.

Curved forms and a restrained material palette create a sense of continuity, with the kitchen, dining and living spaces flowing together while maintaining moments of enclosure and intimacy.

West London House.

The extension establishes a new identity alongside the original Victorian house, using a lighter-toned brick and cast concrete elements to articulate the façade.

Openings are deeply set and framed to create depth and shadow, with curved forms introduced at ground level and within the upper storey to soften the massing and give the building a sense of rhythm.

Rodenhurst Court, SW4: testing massing through making.

Before committing to plans, we built a physical model to properly understand the site, its constraints and its neighbours.
The first image shows the cleared site. The following three explore a more restrained single family house, a larger single dwelling with a stronger presence, and two smaller houses arranged around shared amenity space.
Each approach grows from the same disciplined massing strategy, stepping back upper levels, maintaining separation distances and carefully shaping the envelope to respond to previous concerns regarding dominance and overbearingness.
Back-land sites require restraint and understanding. The form should feel logical and inevitable rather than imposed.
Physical models remain one of the most direct ways to test and find that balance.
