Amari | Insight | Tiles

Using tiles in interior design is a versatile and durable option that can dramatically enhance the aesthetic and functionality of any space. They are available in a variety of materials, including ceramic, porcelain, glass, natural stone, and even cement, each offering unique characteristics suitable for different areas of the home. Whether used on floors, walls, or as decorative accents, tiles can transform a room through their colour, texture, and pattern possibilities.

Durability and Maintenance
Tiles are known for their durability, making them a popular choice for high-traffic areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways. Porcelain and ceramic tiles, in particular, are hard-wearing and resistant to water, stains, and scratches, ensuring longevity with minimal maintenance. Natural stone, such as marble or slate, offers luxurious appeal but often requires sealing and more attentive care. For ease of maintenance, glazed tiles resist moisture and stains, making them ideal for bathrooms or kitchen backsplashes where spills and splashes are common.

Versatility in Design
The versatility of tiles allows them to be used in a range of interior styles, from classic to contemporary. They come in a wide array of shapes, sizes, and finishes, allowing for endless design possibilities. Large format tiles, for example, create a sleek, modern look by minimising grout lines, which can make a space feel larger and more seamless. On the other hand, smaller, mosaic tiles can add texture and visual interest, perfect for accent walls or intricate floor designs. Patterns like herringbone, chevron, or hexagonal layouts can also add a dynamic element to the design.

Colour is another key aspect when choosing tiles. Neutral tones like whites, greys, and beiges can create a calm, timeless atmosphere, while bold colours and patterns can make a striking statement. For instance, Moroccan or encaustic tiles are known for their vibrant colours and intricate patterns, adding a touch of exoticism and personality to spaces like bathrooms or kitchens. Contrasting tile colours or textures can help delineate different zones within open-plan spaces, offering both functional and aesthetic benefits.

Enhancing Small Spaces
In smaller spaces, like bathrooms or narrow hallways, tiles can be especially transformative. Light-coloured, glossy tiles reflect more light, making a room appear larger and brighter. Vertical or diagonal tile layouts can also visually elongate a room, enhancing its proportions. Large tiles can give the illusion of more space by reducing the number of grout lines, while mirrored or glass tiles can amplify light and openness. In contrast, small mosaic tiles can add character and texture to small areas, particularly when used as a border or in niches.

Eco-Friendly Options
Many homeowners today are considering the environmental impact of their design choices. Tiles, especially those made from natural materials like stone or clay, can be an eco-friendly option. Some manufacturers also produce tiles from recycled materials, reducing the carbon footprint of home renovations. Additionally, tiles contribute to energy efficiency by improving thermal mass, which helps regulate indoor temperatures. In warm climates, tiles keep spaces cool, while in cooler regions, they can retain heat when paired with underfloor heating systems.

Conclusion
Tiles are an incredibly versatile and practical material for interior design. Whether you want to make a bold decorative statement or create a timeless, durable surface, tiles offer a wealth of design opportunities. Their durability, low maintenance, and adaptability make them suitable for any room in the home, while their variety in colour, texture, and pattern allows for endless creativity. From sleek, modern designs to traditional, intricate patterns, tiles can elevate the style and functionality of any interior space.

Looking for ideas on how to make your little home look bigger and more spacious? See some techniques architects and interior designers use to get the most out of small spaces....
Oversize
- It may sound counter intuitive, however, using large format or oversized products can actually make a room/property feel bigger
- In this instance we used floor to ceiling doors, windows and wardrobes to alter the perspective
- Wide floorboards and slab stone cladding to bathrooms helped create scale
Mirrors
-The bathrooms were very tight so to increase perceived size we used mirrors on two walls which had a cost effective and dramatic affect
- Also oversized floor standing mirrors were strategically placed around the property when it was dressed
Glazing
- Wherever possible make the natural light via glazing as big as possible
- Apart from floor to ceiling windows in this development we added a skylight and high-level glazing above the kitchen to allow light in
Lighting
- Apart from maximising natural light via glazing artificial light can be critical to atmosphere and perception
- Use techniques such as recessed LED and up lighting ceilings to create space
Colours & Tones
- Look to use lighter tones to wall and vertical finishes
- Here we used a darker floor to create contrast and accentuate the vertical element of the property
Proportions
- Vertical and horizontal proportions can change the look and feel of space in a room - if these are exaggerated it can create a feeling of space
- For example, in the living room the horizontal kitchen increases the feeling of width whilst the vertical blinds height
- Similarly, in the bedrooms the wardrobes had floor to ceiling doors and windows with wide plank floors

I hope this has been of help and good luck with your projects?!

Art & Architecture
This project included a basement and complete refurbishment of a 4,750ft2 family home in the heart of Fulham. Having lived in the property of over ten year's the clients decided to give their beloved home a complete makeover rather than move.

The property includes five bedrooms all with ensuite, cinema, gym, wine store, games room with bar, as well as some Banksy inspired graffiti! From the Smallbone kitchen to the bespoke joinery and fitting of airconditioning throughout, no expense was spared.

As well as the quality of finishes a period stone-clad cantilevered stairs was constructed to the first floor with a more contemporary one to the lower ground floor, elevating the circulation space from the ordinary to the amazing.

Wall finished were not forgotten with tadelakt to bathrooms as well as the use of incredible wallpapers meant to uplift the atmosphere.

From the entrance lobby with reconfigured stair layout to allow a view straight through into the newly design garden to the rear one is comforted with the new cantilevered stair. To the right is the double reception room with new Chesney fireplace, jumbo herringbone floor with brass border inlay and period decorative cornice as well as a bespoke desk area with inlay.

This leads into the large Smallbone kitchen with Sub Zero appliances and cooking range with Timothy Oulton crystal pendant over the island. From there the garden beckons, completely redesign and reconfigured to reflect the social nature of the client and containing a walk-on roof light that covers a lower ground terrace with access into the games room and bar.

The Spiral Wine Cellars wine store is handily placed next to the games room and bar, with a fully functioning cinema room leading off it. Did I mention that the whole house has been automated with regards to both lighting and audiovisual equipment? The lower ground also houses a fully functional gym with spa and large utility/laundry room and plant.

Upstairs there are five bedrooms all with ensuite and bespoke joinery. Bathrooms include tadelakt wall, TVs and Corian baths and basins. As mentioned they are also serviced by a new airconditioning system to make sure the occupants are kept at the perfect temperature, whatever the weather!

This really was a fantastic project and the client was delighted with the results.
