We've had three Year 12 students doing Work Experience with us last week. They carried out mini-projects on workplace design, exploring different ideas for meeting spaces, call booths and multi-functional partitioning at the new office we'll be moving to later this summer. We are so excited by their ideas and impressed with the presentations of their work at our Friday Design Review lunch. We held really useful conversations about careers and the future.

sharpened our pencils for London School Of Architecture's first Summer Design Charette - two days of quick design thinking about an under-user site in Hackney. Our team, with .pywell & .arch, proposed "The Hackney Platform 📣", a public-facing expansion facility to serve students studying performing arts at , the and other local institutions. Available for community use out-of-hours, the idea gives youth a voice and a space right on the doorstep of the town hall. Thanks for having us and for your help Will .

New light wells complete for the Drill Hall. We have punched through the existing slab to flood the lower floors with natural light; re-imagining the building once used by Royal Army Service Corps 1st Anti-Aircraft Division, to make light and airy office accommodation for future occupiers

As the draws to a close, we look back at the Pixel HÛT which was installed as part of the LFA 2018 and formed a backdrop to the Great Get Together Bankside. The pixelated canopy stretches over the heads of pedestrians, loosely defining a shared space which reflects our need for shelter. Dichroic lenses on the pixels are illuminated by sunlight giving a family-friendly, interactive and playful environment of colour and shade

Today we have our annual practice review where we reflect on the past year and build shared goals for the future. We were lucky enough to be hosted by The Phoenix Garden Community Building, recent winner of RIBA London Award 2021. The garden which prioritised sustainable techniques and a hub for people was the perfect backdrop for the discussion around the HUT core values that underpin all that we do:
1. Re-imagine 2. Delight 3. Patina and 4. Enrichment

Gilray House is finalist for the Awards in the Refurbishment & Adaptive Reuse category.

The existing building was constructed during the 1930’s in the art-deco, industrial style.

HUT were engaged by to deliver the retrofit and two-storey extension of Gilray House from a previously consented planning scheme.

HUT’s approach to sustainability for this project was ‘re-use’ and ‘re-imagine’ and this became the key driver of the brief. Where possible the intention was to retain and re-use the existing building fabric while maximising the useable floor area and implementing exemplary design.

Astute Fire to comply with building regulations; existing features including original staircase, wrought iron balustrades, metal signage, and Crittall windows were refinished and made good to further extend their life span with much of the original concrete structure was retained

Glastonbury Festival! We are sad not to be there this year but here is throwback to The Guardian Lounge HÛT designed for the festival in 2005. The main structure, resembling a giant folded newspaper was made entirely from re-cycled, re-used, and re-purposed building materials and elements. All the furniture and fittings were salvaged or recycled, with a 20m long glowing magenta bar made out of multi-wall building plastic and a recycled timber bar top. Bar stools were made out of scaffolding pole, tables from old floor joists, and the various lounge decorations and furnishings sourced from salvage. Swipe for real glasto vibes!

Using 'Nurtured by nature' as a starting point, HUT re-designed a garden for a nursery in Waltham Forest. The garden uses recycled pre-existing materials and recovered household items from the local community and nursery. A water wall, sandpit and music wall provides interactive play for the children whilst an abstract mural inspired by the local Wetland Centre is a backdrop to the children’s play space. Timber railway sleepers form the flower beds and an insect hotel will teach the children about biodiversity
