Feasibility study for a rear extension. We explored a range of layouts in 2D. Here’s how we pressure test them in 3D. Panoramic House, Hampstead. Completed 2025. 📸

The project involves the extension and comprehensive redevelopment of a large detached house in a Hampstead conservation area. Our client, a family with teenage children,, wanted to extend the lower ground floor to create more living space and a better connection to the south facing garden.

Extending into the garden presented an opportunity to drop down and become immersed in it. The resulting extension cascades down from the host building, dropping almost a metre in floor level. This change in height brings the living space right into the garden but also subtly creates different zones (based on height difference) within a single open plan.

The extension is defined by an open glazed corner facing into the garden and adjacent terracing decks. Clad in hit and miss Iroko timber battens that create texture and depth, it’s capped with an overhanging and tapering roof to shield from the elements. The roof mitigates overheating during the summer months when the sun is high in the sky. Its underside, clad in mirror polished stainless steel, reflects the surrounding greenery which helps to dissolve its form.
