Cooling off vegetables quickly disperses "field heat" and helps them last longer. Once inside, for the longest storage life, wrap each cucumber in a dry paper towel and put it into a plastic bag. Store them in the veggie crisper drawer of your fridge, and they will stay fresh for weeks!

We enjoy the painted serpent and different heat-loving Armenian cucumber varieties from the garden all summer. What are you harvesting right now?

Grow potatoes in Grow Bags 🥔 Comment LINKS for my Potato growing resources and link to the grow bags I use. ⁣

Here’s how to do it: ⁣

• Place a 3-4 inch layer of loose soil, amended with compost, in the bottom of the container. (Roll down the sides of the container if desired.) Potatoes prefer slightly acidic soil.⁣

• Plant seed potatoes sprouted side up in soil and cover them with 2-3 inches of additional soil. ⁣

• As potatoes sprout, cover the sprouts halfway when they are about 6 inches tall. ⁣

• Continue this process until the top of the container is reached, at this point, the plant will continue to grow without being covered up.⁣

(Hilling the potatoes ensures that determinate potatoes are not exposed to sunlight and turn green, ensuring a larger harvest of indeterminate varieties.)⁣

• When you are ready to harvest the entire container, gently dump it into a wheelbarrow, carefully not to damage the potatoes. Let potatoes cure for a few hours in the shade outside. Brush loose soil off the potatoes, and store them in a cool, dry place until ready to use them.⁣

Comment LINK, and I'll send details for planting–plus when and how to cut back each of these crops at the end of the season.

There's a reason I keep talking about the benefits of cover crops. They keep your soil alive and microbially active through the hot summer months, and these three crops don't mind the heat.

• Black-eyed peas and other heat-loving beans produce vigorously and are well-suited for cover crops.
•Sweet potatoes have a long growing season, deep roots, and sprawling vines and produce edible leaves and tubers (depending on when you harvest them).
•Tithonia is a large plant that produces significant plant matter. This vegetation decomposes quickly and may improve soil fertility as a chop-and-drop mulch.

Comment LINKS for my rosemary 🪴 resources sent to your inbox. ⁣

Although rosemary is easy to grow, it’s also easy to kill. ⁣

Rosemary struggles when grown in rich soil. Instead, plant it on the outskirts of your garden in native, slightly alkaline soil with a pH level of around 7. ⁣

The beautiful purple flowers will attract bees and wildlife to your garden. ⁣
