Major Breakthrough Achieved for Pan-European Memorial for Victims of Totalitarianism Following High-Level Brussels Meeting
BRUSSELS — A major milestone has been reached in the realisation of the highly anticipated Pan-European Memorial for the Victims of Totalitarianism - An Echo in Time. Last week, a successful project reunion meeting was convened in Brussels, marking a significant breakthrough for the landmark initiative.
Organised by Urban Brussels, the high-level meeting brought together a comprehensive group of stakeholders, including local, municipal, and regional institutions, alongside representatives from the wider Brussels and European communities. The collaborative discussions demonstrated strong alignment and renewed momentum for the project’s next phases.
The memorial is slated for construction on the Esplanade of the European Parliament (The Solidarność 1980 Esplanade). Designed by artist and architect Tszwai So, the project is being facilitated by the Platform of European Memory and Conscience.
This momentum follows decisive political backing from the European Parliament. At a plenary session in Strasbourg last month, the Parliament reaffirmed its steadfast support for the memorial, emphasising its role in reflecting and honouring the diversity of Europe’s historical experiences.
With key institutional stakeholders aligned and European backing secured, the project moves closer to establishing a permanent space for reflection and shared remembrance in the heart of the European quarter.
