Crazy For Daisies

Iconic spring and summer blooms, with slim, white ray-like petals and sunny yellow centres, it’s partly the simplicity of daisies that’s so refreshing. Take us as you find us, they appear to say. We are what we are. And they seem happy with that, secure in the knowledge that they don’t have to try too hard to be loved.

The daisy family is huge, with over 32,000 member species. It includes some you might expect – cosmos, echinaceas, asters and sunflowers all have a vaguely daisy-like appearance, but others you might not expect, and may, indeed, be surprised by. Dahlias, achilleas and solidago all fall into this group, but so do lettuce, tarragon and endive. This begs the question as to how plants are actually classified. How can lettuce be a daisy?

Tomorite isn’t just for tomatoes!

This liquid feed is high in potash, which helps flowering and fruiting plants do well through the summer months. As we head into June and July, with many plants coming into full bloom, a regular feed will keep them looking their best.

Tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers and peppers all benefit, especially when grown in containers. Roses, dahlias, hanging baskets and pots filled with summer bedding also respond well to a weekly feed.

🌸 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝗺𝗼𝘀 - With delicate, daisy-like flowers held above feathery foliage, cosmos bring height and movement to borders and pots. Easy to grow and long-flowering, they're loved by bees and butterflies too.
🌸 𝗢𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗺 - These cheerful daisy-like flowers come in warm shades of apricot, orange, pink and yellow. Long-flowering and easy to care for, they're a great choice for borders, pots and hanging baskets.
🌸 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗮𝘀 - A summer bedding classic. Bold, bright and reliable, petunias in red, pink and purple bring instant colour to baskets, window boxes and patio containers.

With just a little care, these stunning plants can reward you with blooms for months at a time.

Quick orchid care tips:
☀️ Keep in bright, indirect light
💧 Water when the compost feels almost dry
🌸 Feed with orchid fertiliser during the growing season
🪏 Repot every couple of years with orchid compost

Foxgloves are true garden classics, their tall spires of thimble-shaped blooms rising dramatically from rosettes of soft, downy leaves. They bring a wild, romantic feel to any planting scheme and work beautifully in cottage-style borders and naturalistic settings.

☀️ Partial shade is ideal, though they will tolerate full sun in cooler spots

The Thane of Glamis thought a forest on the move was as likely as pigs flying. Had he popped by the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026, he might have reconsidered his life choices.

Enter May Starey, the mastermind behind a garden that distils the essence of Scotland and ships it to London SW3. Located on the Serpentine Walk, her Balcony Garden tells the tale of a whisky distillery nestled in the foothills of Scotland’s Cairngorm mountains, with thoughtful planting transitioning from grassland to woodland. During this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show I had the pleasure of meeting May, and she invited me to cross the rope barrier into the exclusive territory of judges, sponsors, celebrities, and TV gardening royalty.
