Biophile

Biophile Biophile is a studio who progress biophilic architecture through the use of digital design and fabrication technology in our built environment.

Biomimetics

Biophile fully embraces biomimetics but looks to move beyond the sometimes strict, scientific interpretation of natural systems and structures towards the creation of something more engaging and human. Biophilia

Biophile is directly inspired by American biologist Edward Owen Wilson's theory of biophilia. The theory suggests that human beings have a natural bond to nature and other li

ving organisms and systems. According to Wilson this bond is genetic and our affection to nature is one of the keys to human survival. Rather than only pursue the formal and expressive endeavours of previous styles that were inspired by nature, the research looks to enhance this by integrating living systems and vegetation within the built environment. Materiality

As proponents of digital tools, Biophile utilises avant garde modelling and manufacturing techniques to investigate the progressive, intelligent and appropriating material conditions. The ambition of this research is to not only challenge how we construct our environments but how it affects its inhabitants and how they subsequently engage with it

UG2 : Natural State
“an object of observation can be, in a number of different ways, partly natural, partly artefactual, and something that is a natural object might nevertheless not be in a natural state” Malcolm Budd, 2002
This year we will explore the reverse, proudly displaying the fact that buildings are always in a natural state. Appreciating them as such , might aid in connecting us to our place within the biosphere, developing appropriate ecological thought to mitigate global warming.
