Martin Place Metro Station in Sydney has been shortlisted in the Completed Buildings: Transport category at the World Architecture Festival Awards 2025!

Led by Grimshaw, this transformational project in the heart of Sydney’s CBD is Australia’s first truly integrated station development. It brings together metro infrastructure, two commercial towers, retail, and vibrant public realm into one connected precinct.

Developed over nine years in collaboration with Macquarie Group and Sydney Metro, the design delivers a seamless street-to-platform experience. A permeable ground plane, generous daylight-filled atria, and civic-scaled entrances create a calm, intuitive environment that strengthens Sydney’s urban fabric and supports the city’s long-term growth.

Martin Place sets a new benchmark for transport architecture. It combines sustainability, customer-focused design, and place-making to provide not just a station but a civic destination that reflects the identity and aspirations of Sydney.

Martin Place Metro is one of three Grimshaw-led projects shortlisted at WAF this year, alongside the Croton Water Filtration Plant in New York and the Athens International Airport Expansion in Greece.

The Croton Water Filtration Plant in New York has been shortlisted in the 2025 World Architecture Festival, a finalist in the Completed Buildings: Production, Energy and Logistics category.

Located in the Bronx, the plant — filtering and delivering 290 million gallons of water per day, up to 30% of New York's potable water supply — is not only a critical piece of infrastructure but has also become a place of recreation, biodiversity, natural habitat and park restoration. Responsible for the design of all the above ground buildings and landscape strategy, Grimshaw has worked with NYC Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP), NYC Department of Design and Construction and NYC Department of Parks & Recreation across the whole programme of work, including the design of the arrivals and receiving buildings for the facility as well as, in the later phases, the Mosholu Golf Club and a viewing platform.

The Croton Water Filtration Plant is one of three Grimshaw-led projects, including Athens International Airport in Greece and Martin Place Metro in Sydney, Australia, to be shortlisted this year!

The 2025 World Architecture Festival Awards shortlist is out and Athens International Airport Expansion has made it through as a finalist in the Future Project: Infrastructure category.

Led by an international team including Grimshaw, Haptic Architects, K-STUDIO, Arup, Leslie Jones Architecture, Triagonal - Information Design and Plan A Consultants Ltd, the design concept brings together the existing and the new airport facilities to enable the airport to increase its passenger capacity from 26 to 40 million by 2032, through a phased upgrade within a live operational airport. This unifying concept also responds to its context through architecture, materiality, landscape and the Athenian life. And two microcosms of this, a north and south oculus, create real Mediterranean experiences and gardens, to meet, wait and reflect: destination and dwelling places in an inherently transient environment.

Oriental Eden in Qingdao is open, bringing a unique cultural experience to China focused on the wonder and vitality of water as the life blood of nature, culture and civilisation.

Located on Jiaozhou Bay in the Shandong Province, and designed by Grimshaw with schlaich bergermann partner sbp for Jinmao Holdings in consultation with Eden Project, Oriental Eden sits at the confluence of two rivers on reclaimed and environmentally damaged land originally used for salt production and prawn breeding.

The story of water, it's scarcity, abundance and quality, is brought to life through indoor and outdoor environments, including the Storm Forest, a giant tropical biome, where living landscapes, immersive experiences and performance come together.

'Oriental Eden continues our approach of creating beautiful structures inspired by the efficiency of nature, made unique by the specific requirements of the location and theme.' Jolyon Brewis

Spanning 200 acres, and inspired by Eden Project Cornwall, Oriental Eden furthers Eden Project's mission to inspire positive action for the planet. Here the regeneration of this site into a thriving ecological place is another powerful example of how we can restore and protect nature.

New images of Eden Project Morecambe have been released, sharing the evolved design of this unique destination. Inspired by the natural geometries, beauty and efficiency of seashells, two structures — the Realm of the Sun and the Realm of the Moon — will house extraordinary living landscapes and immersive worlds and sit within sculpted external spaces and gardens.

With Morecambe Bay’s tidal range one of the largest in the world, the natural rhythms of nature underpin all aspects of Eden Project Morecambe. And world-class art, performance, storytelling, interactive installations and play will all be part of this world-class destination: a place deeply connected to its context, respecting and complementing the highly valued heritage landmarks of Morecambe.

‘This project is profoundly important to us all. It is not just a project for Morecambe, but for the whole of the UK, and we are delighted to share how the design process is progressing.’
Andy Jasper, Chief Executive Officer of the Eden Project

The project is being delivered in partnership with Lancaster City Council, Lancashire County Council and Lancaster University and is due to open in late 2028.

As part of the Anemos consortium Grimshaw, Haptic Architects, K-STUDIO, Arup, Leslie Jones Architecture, Triagonal - Information Design and Plan A Consultants Ltd have been appointed to design the expansion of Athens International Airport. The project will increase the capacity of the airport from 26 to 40 million passengers by 2032 through a phased programme delivered within a live operational airport environment.

Unifying the existing airport with new elements, across the main and satellite terminal buildings, is central to the design concept: an airport that reflects the past, present and future of the city. This is guided and informed by a response to the spirit of Athenian life, the architecture and materiality of Athens, and the celebration of a city that is ingrained with layers of time.

Two new unforgettable Athenian moments in the terminal building are created by the north and south oculus — destination and dwelling points where passengers experience, in a Mediterranean garden, a microcosm of city life. Pragmatic in layout securing an ease of operations, efficient flows and intuitive wayfinding, this sense of place will pervade in the design, with a rich landscaping strategy, cohesive and natural materials, and an infusion of daylight to all parts of the terminal building.

The project is targeting LEED Gold Standard.

‘Knowing what guidance to follow, for tackling carbon emissions, and when to use it is a challenge the built environment sector.’

In ‘Smart Architecture to Reduce Whole-life Carbon in Building and Infrastructure’, published in The Routledge Companion to Smart Design Thinking in Architecture & Urbanism, Paul Toyne writes about the imperative to take a holistic system thinking approach to built environment solutions to the climate challenge. Minoro — launched in 2024 and developed by Grimshaw in collaboration with the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, RIBA, Architecture 2030, the World Green Building Council and several national Green Building Councils across the globe — is a step towards this, centralising the advice, guidance and methodology to help reduce whole life carbon across project life cycle for new and existing buildings across the world.

‘Understanding the interconnectedness of resilience, health and well-being, biodiversity and planetary boundaries with net-zero carbon in the built environment will be essential so that future investments can deliver co-benefits across all issues for us, nature and the restoration of Earth.’

‘Smart Cities require smart governance.’

The Routledge Companion to Smart Design Thinking in Architecture & Urbanism, edited by Dr. Mitra Kanaani, has been published, with the chapter ‘From Smart to Autonomous Cities on the Eve of AI’ authored by Andrew Whalley, Tim Williams and Andy Watts.

With digital tools in architecture and urban design yet to be fully exploited, Andrew, Tim and Andy consider the implications of generative AI on the future of our cities and their development, and its impact on the architecture and urban design profession. The risks and opportunity of advanced digital technology — the power of data — need to be balanced, demand private and public sector collaboration, ethical accountability, and a strong commitment to ensuring the technological transformation in our cities is focused on shaping and creating equitable, healthy and successful places.

‘There is no better time to begin laying the foundation for limitless innovation in the interest of all.’
