Texas meets Firminy. The vision of this drawing came to Wheat while (through his own admission) Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, also known as Le Corbusier, and he explored mushrooms. The following morning, the ‘new Dustin’ sketched out the composition above and rendered it over the following week.

‘The Minecraft Labyrinth – A Reclamation of Childhood’ by Eric Pham (.pham___), a student at . Shortlisted for The Architecture Drawing Prize 2022 in the digital category.

Pham’s piece was made entirely within the videogame ‘Minecraft’, a game that uses voxel blocks to build entire world environments. It defined a generation of children and was a game Pham experimented in for over a decade. This world is a culmination of that decade, looking at games as representations of spatial conditions.

Situated at the former heritage Cable Tram Engine House, Mnemosyne is a democratic art institute led and facilitated by its three distinct academies: painting, textile and digital art. It aims to produce, gather and disseminate mementos from a diverse range of individuals whose private memories eventually become public knowledge.

‘The Stamper Battery’ by William du Toit (.design), a student at . Shortlisted for The Architecture Drawing Prize 2022 in the hybrid category.

Du Toit’s allegorical architectural drawing is inspired by E.M. Forster’s 1909 short story ‘The Machine Stops’. It represents a seminal tale of environmental devastation caused by the 1860s Otago Gold Rush in New Zealand. Combining orthographic, notation and layering techniques to preserve an important heritage story of place identity, it acts as a lesson for future generations to learn from past mistakes.

Inspired by ’ concept for New International Airport Mexico City, this is the result of a series of working drawings and renders. Through a long process of refining a viewpoint and eliminating unnecessary details, Johnson presents an image that is timeless, floating between earth and sky, all leading to a still point. It’s contemplation through drawing.

The winner of The Architecture Drawing Prize 2022 hybrid category is ‘Fitzroy Food Institute’ by Samuel Wen (), a student at ’s .

Wen’s project is about a dumpling institute that deviates from the traditional orientalist attitude towards Chinese culture, while also examining ideas of globalisation and automation. The composite drawing consists of one plan, two sections, two elevations, four views, six diagrams, one detail and two call-outs – all arranged in a top-down view of a typically Chinese roundtable dining experience.

The winner of The Architecture Drawing Prize 2022 hand-drawn category is ‘The Spirit of Mountain’ by Weicheng Ye, a student at South China University of Technology.

Ye’s drawing uses modern architecture to translate the Song Dynasty Chinese landscape painter Fan Kuan's ‘Travelers among Mountains and Streams’ (溪山行旅图). Drawn using just a pencil, it conveys a joyful spirit of a landscape. Inheriting the ancient literati's concept of nature, Ye looks to further reshape the relationship between the man-made and nature, reconstructing the relationship between mountains, water, buildings and plants.
